In the last minute of Steve Vai's quot;Tender Surrenderquot;, he's doing something unusual with the wah. It seems more pronounced, and steadily increases going into the last seconds of the song. The notes almost sound like they're begging for mercy.
Anyone know what he might be doing here, technique-wise, to get that effect?

btw - Thanks to whoever it was that turned me on to this song in a recent thread.
That sounds to me like careful manipulation of both the wah, trem bar, and the fact that he's playing octaves instead of single notes.
i thought he just went berserk on the trem.. that's what he does on the videohe just signed on to MSN .. let me ask him
yea right
Which video? I just may have to get that.
it's on video.google.com somewhere... here

I believe he depresses the trem, and frets the notes while siultaneously bringing the bar up quickly, while using the wah. It really accentuates that quick, overly exaggerated wah sound. More of the sound comes from the trem technique rather then the wah.
