There are so many threads in the pickup lounge that get repeated. Sometimes its as easy as doing a search to answer someones question. Could something be added to the faq or a sticky on some of the more popular questions?

I think that's what the quot;vaultquot; is for, although it seems to be only for reviews... maybe polls could go there too (eg. This bloody quot;custom or jb?quot; thing which crops up every single week!!!). Actually, that's a decent idea - why not expand the vault to include polls and common queries? (eg. what pups for my les paul playing which style of music). I'd find that more helpful than the tone wizard thingy....

I have a slightly different take on this, that is, if I'm understanding you correctly.

(btw - Let me add, that I'm using your post to vent this thought. I'm not criticising your specific idea.)

There's another audio-related forum that I used to hang out in, where this came up often. It wasn't unusual to have forum quot;veteransquot; post 3 or 4 paragraph long rants telling newbies why they should use the search function because this has been discussed a million times before . . . when the actual answer would have been one sentence.

Sometimes newbies to the forum use a simple question as a way of saying quot;heyquot; to the forum, and starting a conversation. Those same questions give semi-newbies, a way to contribute something back. They can respond with cool pickup info that they themselves have recently learned, and thus, a new forum relationship is formed.

As long as one does a reasonable job of getting the thread title close to the subject matter, veterans can just skip that one over, and let someone else have a shot at it. Its actually, a pretty good system.

In the old forum the search function sucked big time. I guess we then built the habbit of answering the same questions again and again.

Ain't that right Jeremy?

I agree. And if it were to come to that we (at least I did that onmore than a few occasions) dig up relevant cool threads.

I actually don't mind the similarity in posts here in the pickup lounge, which really seems to be the main place that happens. And it makes sense, think about it. You're not happy with the current pickups in your guitar, so you start researching a few brands. You find out SD has a forum, sweet! You go there and there's a place called quot;the Pickup Loungequot;, double sweet! My first thought would be quot;That's where I need to be to ask my question!quot;

I wonder what percentage of new members to this board make their first post in this room?

Hey I can handle it . Actually the people in this forum are extremely helpful and very friendly. There are other forums out there that rarely stay on topic the way this one does. I generally enjoy the topics quite a bit.

I guess my idea was to point out the use of the search forum and vent a little myself.

You know...I don't really mind to much answering alot of the same questions over and over, because I love talking about guitars and music. And I learn something new here all the time.

Like over on the Sound Room page today. Someone asked for a recommendation for a Marshall Combo amp and I made my usual recommendation of a '82 (BUT NOT AN '86!) JCM 800 50 watt - a recommendation I've made dozens and dozens of times over the years.

Whenever I say the '82 version sounds better than the '86 version someone who owns an '86 chimes in about how great thier amp is and the usual discussion ensues.

But this time, after all these years, we found out why they sound differant. Turns out that there's more filter caps in the '82 and power supply in the '82 is more complex.

So, I don't really mind discussing the same things over and over because I like talking about this stuff anyway and every once in a while new information comes forward about these same old subjects and I learn something.

Besides that, it's fun!

AMEN!

The ONLY posts that bug me the least little bit are the quot;I wanna sound like Zakk Wylde, I have a Les Paul, Marshall but absolutely, flat-out refuse to even consider EMGs.quot; face it, people are often lazy (mentally) ... couple that with a desire to be waited on and paid attention too and you've got your reason right there why people post a thread instead of look things up with a FAQ or search

what gets me is when guys post a question wanting to know where they can find out about something with more words than it wouldve taken to just type the keywords into google ...

trust me, google knows more than we all do about that kinda sstuff

but hey, its a social community and getting to answer a question and be helpful is a blessing twice

whatcha gonna do?

cheers

I love the Search function ... at the beginning of everyweek I key in search words that I have experience with ('59, Full Shred, Line 6, Prophet, Metal etc)

And then I can find new and old question where I can be of assistance.

I add the Prophet in there just incase anyone responds to a specific post by me ... pretty ingenious

Try searching Seymour's Q amp; A! There is phenomenal amount of information about pickups. It is so good to see that he has been sharing the vast information he has regading pickups.

I dont mind reading simular posts and aswers either . Further more unlike other forums the topic starter doesnt get jumped upon by 50 people telling him/her to use search buttons or read the FAQ when the question has allready been asked. People bashing others with their quot;wisdomquot; on forums like that anoy me lots so i cherish the way things go around here .
