Hi, I have recently just bought a ESP Ron wood signature alder tele with maple neck, and the bridge pup sounds great but the neck is too muddy and not very articulate and is letting the middle position down what neck pup do you recommend?
I want something with a good high end and clarity and fairly low output to balance with the single coil in the bridge. I have an alnico 2pro in my other guitar and thats is excellent but this is alder so i have no idea what pups suit this kind of wood.
Thanks Dills
More than likely, the AII Pro will be better than the stock; but to what degree? I don't know. You might as well try it since you have it. A Jazz neck model might be a good choice too. Good luck and let us know you results.
for a double coil humbucker in the tele neck, i actually like the 59 alot ... i think it would sound pretty similar to Keef's McCawber and i know it is what Mike Stern uses in his tele clones ... if that isnt enough breadth of variety, i dunno what is
good luck

Ive heard the 59 can be too boomy in the neck, which is something i want to stay clear of.
A Mini-Humbucker may do the trick. I have a SM-1 I plan to put in the
neck of my Tele one of these's day's
The SM-1 rocks in my solid body ash tele (paired with a Jerry Donahue lead). For a fulll-size 'bucker, I'd go with the Pearly Gates. It seems o get along quite well with the STL-2 (Hot Lead) in my MIJ 69 RI Thinline tele.
What about a phat cat will that give me a nice fat single coil tone with clarity in the neck how would it sound in a tele?
The Phat Cat in the neck of a Tele sounds fat and clear with plenty of high end, even with 250K pots. I have one in an ash/rosewood Tele with a Jerry Donahue Tele lead in the bridge, and it's an excellent combo -- mine set is hum-canceling as well. However, I also have a Tele with an SM-3n mini-hb and Ant. I Tele lead and another with a stock Fender Atomic II neck HB and an STL-2 Hot Tele lead, and both of those combos sound excellent as well. My fav varies from day to day. If I were you, I'd decide on what Tele lead pickup I favored, and then choose one those neck pickup options to match -- e.g., I'd choose a mini-HB to go with a vintage-style Tele lead pup, that or a Phat Cat to go with a moderately overwound Tele lead pup, and either a Phat Cat or a PAF-style HB to go with a moderate to heavily overwound Tele lead pup.
i reckon an a2 bucker will be a good option. less boomy in the neck. that leaves you with the a2p, seth, pg and ants unless you are thinking of swapping out the a5 in a jazz or 59 for an a2. i am thinking of doing that on my jazz neck to match a tele hot in one of my teles.
Yeah the alncio 2 pro in my other guitar is perfect, nice and smooth and articulate almost strat like, but i think i might try something different also i need for bite and clarity and less bass.
Go for the phat cat its sounds like it will ****in rock in your tele

that sounds like a pg or phat cat for stock pickups. i am almost sure a jazz with a2 or a3 mag may be what you are looking for. i will post my findings once i find the time to swap the magnets in my jazz.
id say a phat cat might be a very cool choice for the neck with a jd in the bridge
