Has anyone tried the Stew-Mac Golden Age Humbuckers? Thinking about giving them a try and wondered if any one else has. I'm thinking of the hot neck for my Squire Tele, it already has a Hot Rails in the bridge and I like my pickups to match output wise. Thanks!

From my experience, when it comes to pickups you get what you pay for, and if there's a middle man, in this case Stew Mac, and you purchase an inexpensive pickup, it'll sound like an inexpensive pickup.

Even though that pickup might still sound quot;goodquot;, I doubt it'll sound quot;greatquot;.

The one exception might be pickups purchased directly from Bill Lawrence. Bill builds high quality pickups and sells them direct to the public (without a middle man marking the price up) at what is essencially a wholesale price.

His prices really make sense. They're like $50, right? Considering a Duncan typically costs about $70 for the cheaper ones.

I guess. The catch is that you have to like Bill's pickups! Some people do...some don't. I prefer Duncans and Fralins and have never really fallen in love with the sound of Bill's pickups. But that's just me, because Bill does make high quality pickups.
