well, i played through one yesterday, v30 loaded, and it sounded freakin amazing
so i came home amp; priced them, and yeah, $1200 is about twice what I'm wanting to spend on a 4x12, I'd hafta be talked into even spending $800
so is there anything in the lt;$800 range that can get me that kinda sound? the thing i was most impressed with was how much bass it had for being vintage 30 loaded
2nd hand?
Voodoo amps 4x12
NOTHING SOUNDS LIKE AN ORANGE 4x12 EXCEPT ANOTHER ORANGE 4x12
i think you're right. It's like saying, how can i get the sound of a fender strat with texas hots with another guitar w/ different pickups but for cheaper.
Are you sure you don't just like the v30s? All Orange cabs I've ever seen looked to be about the same size as a Marshall bottom (straight front) cab.
Maybe the slightly larger interior volume of the straight cab (vs. angled) is what's giving it the extra bass you're hearing? If you think that might be the case, I'd just try to find a Marshall bottom cab loaded with v30s.
Do Orange cabs have any design features I'm missing that make them better than Marhsall's (other than looking cooler)?
Orange cabs are built like nothing else, it is the construction that really sets the tone apart from other 4x12 cabs.
My V30 Slant Marshall 1960 Vintage cab never lacks bass? Marshall cabs look cool and were the whole start of the 4x12 craze, especially for me...
I still remember standing in front of a whole Marshall stack in the early 70s...Just so Godly and intimidating for a 13 year old...

Don't get me wrong Marshalls don't look bad, but to me Orange cabs look cooler than modern Marshall cabs. However, my '71 or '74 (it's one of the two) Marshall basketweave cab looks better than both. I wish they'd go back to baksetweave as a standard grill cloth... they won't though.
... But to the original poster
I really think the best idea for people who play out a lot is to buy a used cab. You don't really want to be hauling a $800 cab around. Since cabs are so heavy and unwieldy they get scuffed and torn-up really fast, and every tear in the tolex will bug you to no end if you buy an expensive cab.
You could probably find a used 1960AV for *much* less than $800
Maybe an Orange 2x12?
Also, what amp were you playing through it? That might have a little something to do with how much bass you were getting. I've never really found the V30s to be lacking in the low end though...
there lots of 4x12 cabs that can be had for way less than 800 bones, but none of them will have the sound of an Orange cab. Orange cabs are just different.
Most 4x12 cabs are made like Marshall cabs, then there are quot;othersquot; the older HiWatt cabs as well as the older Sound City cabs sound different, there are the oversized Mesa cabs, as well as the Tall Marshall cabs...all these cabs sound different that a typical Marshall cab.
That said, I belive that most people would be hard pressed to tell the difference between most cabs and most other cabs if the speakers were the same.
Marshall straight-fronts have more bass than slant-fronts, too. That may be part of what you were hearing. Get a used Marshall and recover it in orange tolex.

Agreed, but Marshall put the stack on the map and I was influenced pretty heavy by the coolness and looks of the Marshall cabs....I love the early basket weave grille myself, but the reissue cabs didn't offer V30s and I don't like the Greenback 25 watters,so I opted for the V30 Vintage cab...Great cab though...
I always liked the Orange/Matamp stuff also and I remember Zappa and Page using the stuff very early on...

Yep....100% correct and the orange tolex would look way cool..
buy used.
it's not the color I'm after, it's the sound
but if you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between 2 cabs with the same speakers, well, avatar?

Drew...I came very close to going Avatar.I've not read any bad reviews and it's pretty hard to beat the price on his cabs....Might be a great way to go?
I played through an avatar last weekend and I'll tell ya...for the money they are damn hard to beat!
