or Poplar or Swamp ash or... Agathis Which tonewood do you prefer?
Why do you prefer it?It's a common question but I want to know why you guys dig the tonewoods you dig. Give me some wisdom.
Basswood
Excellent tone, light weight, balances well, the best guitars in the world are made from it.
John petrucci, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai... etc etc etc They know a good wood when they see it
rock On
mahogany.
Mahogany. It has a pretty good track record.
Mahogany is my fave.
I like alder and basswood too.
Agathis - NO
Swamp Ash - Anemic icepick - NO
Depends on what I'm looking for. I really like my alder and mahogany guitars but asking which one is better is like asking whether I prefer chocolate or coffee ice cream. I really like the sound of alder for a snappy tone while mahogany is my choice when looking for a bigger, richer sound.
The guitar I currently have being built has a limba body with a cocabola neck. I'm trying to avoid a rut.

Uh, yeah. Maybe your favorite guitars are basswood but I dunno how you determined that they're the world's best.
For Fender and Fender style guitars I always go with either Ash or Alder, and to be honest I have no real preference of the 2. For Gibson and Gibson style guitars limba is my fav but it's quite costly and hard to come by so I settle for mahogany with or w/o a maple top. I will say this though...my one limba guitar has a limba body and neck and it is one of the best sounding 2 bucker guitars I have ever played.
Mahogany. I grew an appreciation for it when I got my all mahogany Gibby LP Special DC.
I have a swamp ash telecaster that I think is amazing, so it's all so personal. I'm not noticing any quot;icepickquot; frequencies (I guess it all depends what pickups you match it with).
Mahogany and Swamp ash.
I don't think swamp ash sounds ice-picky at all, but the mids are scooped. If you do a search, Doc Barlo has clips of two strat bodies, one made out alder and the other out of swamp ash. The electronics and neck are the same -- he just swapped the bodies. To my ears, alder has more mids than swamp ash, but it also has more high-highs, making it the brighter of the two.
Mahogany. Thick, warm, full, and with just enough highs.

My favorite guitar is the best one in the world!
Long live the Fender HM strat - Rock On Bro
Mahogany, it's more to do that I work on it so often I came to love it.
Love some alder.
I'll go with mahogony matched with an ebony fretboard. I looove the tone of my LP and carvin 7-string.
Depends too much on the other factors to say anything definite... but generally I´ll stick to the classics alder, maple, and mahogany
M A P L E !!!!
Mahogany is very fine tone wood.!!!! Love it a lot! I'm a strat guy so i have everying from Alder, Poplar, and Basswood for bodies.... I enjoy Basswood if it's a good quality Basswood. Poplar can be OK but i'd rather have Alder anyday....
My godin is a fine example of a weird wood combo that really works..... The body is soft leaf Maple with a little we bit of Poplar on the wings... but it is 70% maple.... The neck is Mahogany with a rosewood board.... That hard maple body with a Mahogany neck really works wonders.... I may expore that wood combo more in the future for sure!!!! maybe an Alder strat body and a Mahogany neck from Warmoth.....
WhoFan
Mahogany with 1/4quot; maple cap. Solid lightweight Alder. Basswood w/ 1/8quot; maple veneer, an amazing combo that Suhr, Grosh, and Gamp;L are becoming hip to.
i really like ash bodied fender style guitars and mahogany with p90's and humbuckers. classic sounds
If my transam sells, Im going to build a 1/8inch maple caped ash strat.
Yea, Im going to build a classier EVH signature. :P
