Okay, so I got my SD Tweak Fuzz in the mail today. Holy geez. This pedal is EXACTLY what I was hoping it would be. It's great for adding a tiny bit of grind to an already slightly overdriven tone, and it totally nails the huge, massive, square waved out tone so perfectly. I wasn't expecting it to sound THAT much like the Dirty Boy Afro Fuzz that it was modelled after, but it really does sound a holy bunch like it. I tried the pedal with a Reverend Slingshot with P-90s, an SG with Phat Cats and an Ibanez RG. The sounds were smooth and musical and fat with every single guitar.
For an idea of what this pedal sounds like, all you really need to do is scoot on over to and check out the Dirty Boy Afro Fuzz clips. I'll probably post more later. For now, I'm going to play!
p.s. Thanks for Martinsixstringcustoms for hooking me up with the pedal in Canada.
can it get real smooth and compressed sounding?
Yes, I think that's what it does best, is the really smooth and compressed thing.
how does it compare to quot;olderquot; fuzzes like fuzz face etc?
Compared to the more vintage type stuff i've tried like the fuzz face and the fulltone '69, there is a lot more gain and aggression on tap. It's also a heck of a lot more versatile. You pretty much just get one or two sounds with most fuzzes, but with the Tweak Fuzz, some of the preset resonances are voiced tighter and brighter, and others are more flabby. This does NOT sound like a silicon fuzz to me. I know it is, but my ears don't believe it.
man, i so got the thread title the wrong way
what tubes does your morris head have? i've always liked fuzz in EL34 amps, but i'm not sure they'd really match up with my EL84s..
tom
Glad you like it, Tom
My Morris is a hotrodded '59 bassman clone with 6L6's. It's fairly JTM45-ish, but with more gain. It has a very marshally Mercury Magnetic's output transformer. It seems to work amazing with the fuzz.
Actually, the Tweak Fuzz and the Afro Fuzz are 95% the same circuit. The only real difference is that the Afro Fuzz uses germaniums and the Tweak Fuzz uses silicon transistors with a special mod that make them sound identical to germaniums (with the added benefit that they don't shut down under heat).
We did a blind sound comparison with Blues, Alex Saraceno, Kevin Beller - our chief engineer - and me. Blues played the same riffs through both pedals. A/B. Back and forth. Then we had to guess which was which. Kevin and Alex got it. Blues and I didn't. It's that close.

Yeah, I'm not sure how well the tweak fuzz would work with an EL84 amp. Most EL84 amps I try tend to break up a bit on the loose side, and can get flubby and gross on the low end if you aren't careful. Most of the settings on the tweak fuzz aren't very tight in the low end, so you might have some problems there. However, I have a fairly saggy rectifier tube installed in my Morris head, because I like a fairly loose bottom end. Adding the tweak fuzz only makes things looser, but in a really interesting way. My favorite tones from the tweak fuzz are the ones that sound like my amp is about to explode.
ahaa! the neil young 'holy-crap-my-amp's-melting' special
i really didnt get on with the muff with my amp, and you're dead on with the flabby saggy bottom end comment - i used to have a gf like that, too
At times, the really square-waved out sounds almost sound like an analog synth, especially when there's so much gain that the initial attack gets way compressed and the notes sort of swell in.
im getting that effect putting level and drive to 10 on an SD-1 and putting it into the red channel with the gain set quite low.. its almost santana ish, especially if you got reverb in the FX loop

I can't wait to use this pedal live. I hope people's heads asplode!
Is this a fuzz pedal? Ive never heard of one.
They're just hitting the streets. They should be Down Under before the end of July.
Yeah---except it's spelled: quot;DAN UNDAquot;
You can also check out the video of Blues demonstrating it right here on the SD main web page.
