Got my USACG neck it looks really nice!
I was wondering how you guys finish them.

I know a large majority of paints in the automotive section of a wal-mart are laquer based, has anyone tried these?

has anyone tried any wood dies to make it look a little bit amber?

i guess i could just order from re-ranch but laquer is laquer right??

I used amber tint and Tru Oil on mine and it came out beautifully:

from : localhost/www.bluestheater.net/strat54-1.html

I have a can of minwax poly satin at home that I rub on with a lint free cloth. About 3 coats rubbed on and lightly sanded between each or fine steel wool. Mine came out smooth as silk and plays like a dream.

Your site also says:
quot;Finish: light amber aniline dye with hand rubbed gun oil finishquot;

again is that just gun oil from say wal-mart?

THANKS!!!

All lacquer is deffinatly not created equally! I've seen great looking results with duplicolor car paint, but it isn't as durable as good instrument lacquer. LMII.com 's KTM9 is a very good acrylic lacquer that's easy to use. Stewmac nitro lacquer is pretty decent and comes in a spray can. The reranch stuff is excellent. The best would be McFadden's nitro lacquer, but you'd need a way to spray it.

Tru oil is great but takes a little more skill to apply.

THANKS ERIK!

What quot;shadequot; did you get?
Again this is just wal-mart based stuff right? or Lowes Home-Depot etc...

Also mnbaseball91 thanks dude, I have some actual spray equipment at may parents, gravity fed guns etc, we will be using that for the spraying of the body, i was trying to avoid using it to much cause i have to clean it

Go with ReRanch. Stuff that's specifically for instruments is best.

NO, Not all Lacquer's are created equal. The stuff you get in walmart is most likely Acrylic Lacquer. You can get Nitrocellouse Lacquer in some hardware stores,But this is furinature grade and in general thought to be to soft and sticky for a Instrument. The stuff they sell at Reranch is guitar specific along with MacFadden's.

I got it at Home Depot. I went with the clear shade. They have some with a few different tints I think. It protects the wood and adds a nice smooth finish.

THANKS!!!I got the aniline dye from Luthiers' Mercantile.

you can get the Tru Oil (gun oil) from them, too, but the cheapest place I've found is Bass Pro Shops

I put a final coat of Gun Stock Wax on mine - it's bees wax and carnauba

I have used Deft lacquer on several instruments with great results. It is available in aerosol cans at Lowe's for $4.00 a can I believe. It is combarable to ReRanch and StewMac clear coat aerosols and comes in satin, semi gloss and gloss. For necks, I usually buy the tinted clear coat from the Reranch. That way I get the tint and the clear in one can.

For high gloss I use a melamine based catalyst action lacquer made by Rustins. It's incredibly tough.

TRU OIL by a damn MILE!!!! When I use it, I can nearly get the shine of laquer and a finish thats a slick as anything you have ever played!!!! Feels like silk, is not sticky at all, it can be very shinny, dries to a good hard finish that will protect, it is easy to apply, What other reasons do you need!!!!

I'm curious, what are the downsides of an oiled neck?

RAW and polished to a shine, baby... no finish for me, thank you

But on a customeramp;#180;s neck Iamp;#180;ll have to plug the Tru-oil as well
