What is generally regarded as the best distortion pedal for thrash to death metal in the style of Metallica, Megadeth, Kreator, early Sepultira, Nile and stuff like that?
Is the best is a really expensive pedal then which budget pedal is also good?
Thanks
Hey bro, I can let ya know this question has been asked before, so you should try the search function... Personally I've never found a really good budget pedel to model those distortions very well.

May not be the best for that type of music but it'd work: Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi. Love this fuzz pedal, it rocks.
EDIT: Here's a sample (sorry for the poor quality and playing I couldn't think of anything to play...).

from : localhost/used to haev one of those. You're getting a much better sound out of it than I did out of mine. Mine was pure mud.
The best distortion for thrash to death metal comes from the amp, with maybe a tube screamer or Boss Distortion between the guitar and amp for a little extra kick. If you want something to give you that sound at low volumes (bedroom levels), check out the various modellers out there. The PODxt has some serious metal tones in it.

I'm gonna throw a big 1 to that post!

Doesn't one of the metallica guys use a metalzone and he uses a amp with tonnes of headroom so the distortion comes purely from the pedal?

You're thinking of Kirk but no, he doesn't. They both use Mesa Boogie amps but Kirk also uses a Tube Screamer between the guitar and amp.

from : localhost/agree that the Big Muff is awesome. Not real positive if its good for what you want. I have had really good results adding an eq boost behind it it kinda had that billy gibbons distortion going on.
I did that with the 1st 2 songs for the solos.
big muff and an eq pedal is one option. You could also try out one of those Mesa-boogie v-twins, I believe that is what they are called.
What is your current setup?
Good luck!
If u have a tube amp use an overdrive pedal and a good eq pedal (with the volumes on full) and use the eq to get the right tone and the overdrive (and the level boost the frontend of the amp) for distortion.
You may want to take a look at the Mesa V-Twin. Check eBay.
