Hi. I'm a long time reader but this is my first time in the water so be nice. Here is the deal. I own a 93 sg and the stock pups need to go. Here is whta I've been thinking. I play usually alt/classic rock but would like something with a little dirt under its fingernails. So here are my ?'s

1. My first thought was to get a phat cat in the neck with a custom in the bridge. good idea? bad idea? Alo, has anyone ever taken the cover off a phat cat. Do you think I could custom order one that was white without a cover?

2. My next thought was a jazz in the neck with a custom in the bridge. Or should I use a 59 in the neck. I'm basically looking for the old PAF sound with a little more beef, and I heard the custom is good for that.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hey man... welcome.
I dont really understand what you mean by ordering a phat cat without a cover? It's the coil under the cover... also I think a p90 sized pup won't fit into your sg (or is there already one in?), so you'd have to get something to fill in the gap (a fulll sized humbucker is bigger than a p90)
I'm not sure if the Jazz is the right pup for you... it's just a very clean pickup...
For the Neck pos, it seems like you want something like a Pearly Gates´.. it's PAF style amp; a bit meaner sounding than the '59.

Hey man, WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!!

Kommerz is correct, under the chrome is only the black coil. A phat cat would fit, if you want a P90 neck sound then it's the only way to go.

I personally love the jazz. I have it my Heritage LP and am putting one in my next guitar when I get it.

A custom in the bridge would be a good way to go, aggressive but not overly aggressive. It will sound tight, and full in your SG.

Welcome!

I like Seths for the bridge and since you're considering the Jazz, use that in the bridge. I'm using Seths in mine, and they really sound great. Another option that pops up frequently is using '59's.
