I was playing my Epi LP II the other night and all of a sudden I noticed that when I fret the high e string on the 8th fret, the note quot;farts outquot;, in other words it doesnt ring out, it makes this very low crapped out sound, not musical in any way. All the other frets on this string ring out OK.
Can a string just kind of crap out at a particular point like that?
Maybe that fret isn't done properly?
I've had the guitar for a year and its never done that before, the fret looks OK.
I doubt it's the string. It sounds to me like the fret could be coming out of its seat slightly.
Yeah, take it to a luthier, either the 9th fret is a touch too high or the 8th fret is too low.
It's possible that it's not your guitar. There's a phenomenon called 'cone cry.' What happens is that the 1 note you're playing has a particular timbre and resonance that the speaker cab doesn't jive with. It's almost like hitting a note on an electric guitar, while standing in an acoustic guitar store, and a few notes you play make the guitars on the wall go haywire.
[edit] what I described is usually something that happens on wound strings, moreso than on plain strings. I just realized you said high E. It sounds like you may need a proper setup, and to have the wiring looked at. I have a feeling the trussrod needs adjusted, so the string clears the 9th fret easier.
I wouldn't rule out the guitar. Does it do the same unplugged?
Perhaps just a worn down fret? That's been the case for me on a few guitars

Try messing with the eq on the amp, when i use my multi effects unit with my 5150 into the 4x12 marshall, sometimes i use a metal sound that i made myself(its an awefull extreme scooped sound i hate it), its such a bass heavy sound or eq'd in such a way that i can make the 4x12 fart out on low volumes, like bedroom volumes, particularely at the 8th fret infact.
Thanks for all your ideas, much appreciated.
I'm going to plug it into another amp today and see if it does the same thing there, if it doesnt then I guess it is that quot;cone cryquot; effect, thats a weird one for sure. I'll try it unplugged too, thats a good idea.
Another clue for you guys who like this kind of stuff, when I bend this string way up past where it would normally be fretted, it will sound out OK.
This guitar has been getting kind of sketchy on me lately. When I switch from treble to rythym setting sometimes it sounds like something is quot;loosequot;, like full power is not getting to the amp. If I toggle it a few times it usually fixes the problem but as a rookie at this stuff my only guess at it would be the obligatory quot;loose wirequot;, or maybe the switch is shot.
I had my guitar guy replaced the stock hb with a distortion a few months back, don't know if that could have caused the electronics problem.

When I get a chance, I'm going to check out the condition of the solder points/wires at the switch, and probably check out the contact points on the switch.

Why does note quot;fart outquot; only on 1 fret?
