Greetings all ...
I'm new here and I'm hoping someone can help answer a question I have about single coil pickups with individual pole pieces ...
Question : how does the inductance of a single coil PU (Strat style) vary or depend on the presence of the pole pieces ??
... if I remove the pole pieces from the pickup how does the inductance vary ??
(I know it's not a PU anymore - I want a dummy coil with identical loading specs)
If it does vary substantially, can I replace the magnets by Iron poles and get the same L value ??
I hope this ain't too off-topic for the forum ...
peace!

In the case of a Strat pickup, the pole pieces ARE the magnets, so if you pull them out, there will be no magnetic field to ripple through the copper coil (via the vibration of the magnetic metal strings) to create a current -- and therefore zero inductance.
This is the case with a true Strat style pickup. There are some Strat pickups that have adjustable pole pieces with a bar magnet on the bottom, just like your typical humbucker design.
Of course I know that ... that's not what I'm asking ... I want to know how the inductance of the coil changes with removing the magnets ... I know it ain't a pickup after that ...
