I'm Considering Getting A Epiphone quot;vquot; . I'm Ok With Upgrading P/ups And Pots And Such , But What Do You Guys Think About These ??? Any And All Opinions/feedback Welcome . I Like The '58 Korina Style , And They're Relativly Cheap , Used That Is .
Maple necks. Luan veneer on a cheep species mahogany body. The veneer turns dark brown after a few years while the body doesn't change colour. The result is pretty ugly.
I'd rather save up the $$$ and get the Gibson faded V over the epi.
If you like the V shape, look at ESP/LTD or a Jackson... I bet you'll be happier with one of those over an epi...
I was recently in the market for a cheap V and test drove a couple Epi gothic V's (all they had in stock.) I wasn't impressed. I hunted around a little more and finally decided on the Dean '79 series. $500 new with case and it sounds as good as any Gibson I've ever played. Build quality is also top notch although admittedly it's a fairly simple, no frills guitar. Surprisingly I didn't even have to replace the pickups. The stock ones are pretty decent.

There's also the Tokai FV 48 and Hamer Vector models. Both of those have alder bodies though.
from : localhost/Hamer Vector USA though is made out of Limba... god I'd love to have this guitar.
from : localhost/you won't get it for the price of a faded....
I was in the market for a V Last year. I liked the Dean 79' but was not in love with the headstock. The Epi 58' korina looked cool , But I didn't like the veneer Idea. The Tokia's looked pretty cool, but was a Lil' pricey and only avilable in Canada Via ebay. I ended up scoring a Goth on ebay for real cheap. Then transformed it into a 58' (Lotsa work to do) It has a Maple neck and a low grade mahogany body. But now it looks, sounds and plays pretty good.I Wasn't Aware Epi's Had A Veneer . That's Not Right!!! . These Korinas I Mentioned Are On Ebay In The Neighborhood Of $ 350-500.that Hamer Korina-looking V Is Pretty Sweet.how Much Are Those Going For? Do All The Epi V's Have Maple Necks?
The 58 style...do it!!!
In fact at NY Music they have a Dillion one that I think is an alder body, not sure the cost.
Jackson JS30KVs are way better.
I have one and I like it. Its not the greatest guitar I've ever owned, but after the pickup change it sure sounds nice! I'm not a big fan of the neck though. The Epi LP's are much nicer! I had to have a quot;Vquot; though (Albert King fan).
all i can say is V g.a.s.
I had an epi flying v for a few years, and it was actually a great guitar. I bought it about 10 years ago, so for all I know epi quality has gone down in the meantime, but it seriously was a great guitar. Pickups werent the best, switched the stock ones with a SD Jazz and Distortion, but afterwards it sounded great. Really light guitar, but built like a tank. I don't think I've played another guitar that managed to go through as many things as my V and still look great and not reliced.
I don't have it anymore, but would love to get another one for sentimental reasons. However, if I was to, I'd probably go with a Hamer.
I saw on Friday for the first time one of those Korean or whatever Hamer Vectors. It was actually very well put together for a $400 guitar, but I didn't plug it in. The whole Alder body rubs me the wrong way...Alder is just not a good wood for a set/neck through body IME.
All the Epi Vs and Explorers I've seen were... quot;ehhhquot;...
I think I'd save and get a Faded Gibson, I've seen a couple that were quite nice.
The USA Hamer Korina Vectors are big bucks...most new ones I've seen are well over 2 grand and close to 3. I suspect a Mahogany one would cost less. Hamer apparently is VERY choosy about the korina/limba/whatever they use.
