I really love his Gretsch style pickups. I suppose his humbuckers would also be awesome. Does anyone have any experience with them?? I would like to know before I spend $120 on a pickup.
I have his powertrons he put under full sized humbucker covers in a Carvin Fatboy. It transformed the guitar in a major way.
The guitar was very quot;naturalquot; sounding and perfect for chord melody type jazz and clean sounds. I'm not saying the guitar was quot;limitedquot; but it was best suited for me in those roles.
Now it is a bit higher output, more and quot;creamierquot; mids (sorry if that isn't a standardized term) and a more interesting highs and a bit of twang. It has a lot of character now and that is what I like in a guitar. When I had only a couple of guitars I wanted them to be versatile, now I have 6 and I want my guitars to be distinct. This is a very distinct guitar now. It really sounds great, still useable in the jazzy type settings but also uniquely at home in rootsy or blues based rock and classic rock and probably a lot more.
When I first plugged it in, I was just floored by what I heard. I quickly tried to quot;composequot; myself and get down to listening and knob tweaking to really hear what I got. There was no disappointment or weakness that I found. I've not used in a real playing situation yet but I've got a pretty good ear for how a guitar will work in quot;the mixquot; so to speak and I think this guitar will really become a quot;mainquot; axe.
The pickups split nicely too.
