So, a local music store has a mint Gamp;L Legacy (3 single coil) strat. It is used but looks brand new. It has the stock Gamp;L pickups. They want $750.00

They also have a dead mint Tom Anderson Classic strat (3 single coils again) that is very, very nice but is going to be more in the $1300 range. It has Anderson PUs which sound pretty killer with the pull-up pot output boost.

Which one should I consider more seriously? I am also going to checkout a Suhr and a Tyler this weekend at the guitar show. I'd like to hear some opinions on the Gamp;L. It was super nice. It played as well or better as the $3000 custom shop Fenders. The Anderson kicked the hell out of the real strats and looked pretty amazing.

Personally, I'd love to get hold of an Anderson or Suhr. To me, they're the pinnacle of the strat pile. the Gamp;Ls I've played have been nice, but somehow I don't get excited about them. That Anderson will probably hold it's value better, too.

Hey, man. As a strat guy, it is my opinion that the Andersons are among the very best strats out there. I love my Hamer, but the Anderson is a superior guitar, no doubt about it. If you held a gun to my head and made me name the very best strats that I've ever played, Tom Anderson would be my choice. I think that the Gamp;L's are fine guitars, but I would put them into the same category as Hamer. They're both great, and great for the money on top of that. They can't hang with the average Anderson, IMO. Grits is right about resale value, too. Andersons hold value pretty damned well, and Gamp;L doesn't.

One more thing, RGN. If you happen to find a used Zion, check it out. They aren't nearly as consistently outstanding as the Andersons, but I've played a couple that were transcendent guitars.

I bought a used Gamp;L Legacy because it was better than any of the new strats I was looking at that were 2-3 times the price. Found it before I found a strat that really sat well for a decent price.

In saying that, for $1,300 I'd definitely buy an Anderson.

don't forget Music Man...their Albert Lee out-Strats most strats. Their 3 SC Silhouette Special is great too.

Gamp;L makes great guitars. If the Anderson feels like too much dough, don't feel like the Gamp;L isn't good enough. They rock and if you like how it plays and sounds, go for it. As the others said, the Anderson is a top notch strat, but Gamp;L is one of the best production axes out there...

All the strat copies have different plusses and minuses, so it really comes down to the one with the features that make you pull out your wallet.....regardless of brand or price.

To me, the price doesn't make much difference with strats....it's just got to be THE one, and I'll admit that most of mine are good, but not the best I've put my hands on.

I'll tell you which strat I think is the best one ever made, for my taste......I hate to admit it, but it's the new John Mayer signature strat in alder sunburst/rosewood. There's one on Ebay for $1350 I'd love to have, but I'm in the middle of a different strat project at the moment. Part of me wants to sell a couple guitars and buy a John Mayer. I hate the fact it's a signature, but John's idea of the perfect strat is also mine.

As a die-hard Gamp;L player (see below), my vote goes to Gamp;L. Tyler, Suhr, and Anderson guitars are also very good guitars, but in my opinion, not worth the extra money. Gamp;L's build quality is excellent! Legacy's, are nice guitars, but I prefer the hotter pickups in the S-500, or Comanche.Sprinter

Soon you'll have to realize Ed doesn't like anything his name isn't attached to. His is one of the last opinions I'd consider when shopping for guitars. Gamp;L's are mainly strat-style guitars, which just happens to fall directly in competition with his Pearlcaster series.

Give me a f'in break. lol.

Thanks for the feedback. The Anderson has pristine fret work and the Buzz Feinten system. I am going to see if I get a deal on one of them. Wish it had a nitro finish.

Good luck, man. Beat 'em down.

Andersons are great guitars, I personally think the necks are a little thin for my tastes. Suhr strats are incredible, I've also tried the new EJ signatures strat - loved it, the compound radius fret board 10 - 14 was wonderful and the shallow C neck profile fit perfectly, I've owned an SRV and an EC strat and the EJ strat had that feel and tone. I have a Gamp;L legacy deluxe, great guitar, fit and finish are excellent, pickups didn't do it for me, I put in a set of Suhr's and the guitar has great tone now. Something to think about, pickup the used Legacy and fit pickups to match what your looking for or buy a Suhr and be happy right from the start!

agree with much that has been written here, so i wont repeat but to summarize .. Gamp;L, typically a high quality axe for not as much money ... be sure to play the Suhr before deciding because they are often a bit better than the andersons, IMO ... also, for some reason, there are alot of counterfeit andersons on the market .. if your shop is reputable, probably not a problem ... be careful

either way, have fun and enjoy finding the 'one'

cheers

On average I find Gamp;L far better than the average Fender and Anderson a cut above that- But as HamerPlyr pointed out, also keep your eyes open for a used Zion..they have both mid level and top end offerings and on average, I've found them the best. But there are more Andersons out there-

Laugh at me as you might, John is one of my favorite players, but besides that it seems like a cool guitar.

What'd you like about it, specifically?EDIT: In response to the original topic, I would go Anderson. They make a top quality product, even though I dug my Gamp;L a lot.

I wouldn't be embarrassed to own a John Mayer strat, since he can play, but also because he was cool enough to put his signature on the back of the headstock, not the front.

The reason it's my dream strat is...
Lightweight Alder 3 color sunburst body
Chunky C neck with vintage headstock/tuners.
Unlike vintage, it has a flatter radius and taller frets......I hate vintage 7.5.
Traditional bridge.
Good stock pickups you don't even need to change.

If I ordered a custom strat, it'd basically be the exact same strat, but that's just my taste....everyone likes different things in a strat. If you see that Ebay auction, you'll notice that the dealer even says quot;out of thousands of guitars that have passed through my hands, the John Mayer is among my very favorite ones.quot; He's a Fender and Gamp;L dealer too.
