I'm looking at the Minwax website at the moment. For a rosewood fretboard, would any of the listed products, besides STAINS, be useful on guitar fretboards?
from : localhost/help me out!
Rosewood is naturally oily, and doesn't need a finish. I'd say if you want to use some form of mild cleaner on it once or twice a year, that's probably fine. But don't finish it, nor apply anything that'll leave and kind of gunk or residue.
None of them, for cleaning use lighter fluid. For oiling use this, from : localhost/Well, on second thought it says it cant be shipped outside the USA. I am sure it is a Haz-Mat shipment.
Alot of people use Lemon oil for fretboards but, from what I hear excessive use of it can dry out the fretboard. You could also try linseed oil.
Rainmaker I have tried Ecowood Oil quot;Wood wipequot;, made by Organoil in Byron Bay, on my Rosewood necks and it works fine. It's a citrus and nut oil blend designed for wooden food utensils and I got it from Bunnings(Chain of hardware warehouses for the the non-Aussie's).
I also have just started trying Kwik Fret, also an Australia only product but probably available in Kiwi land also. Smells great too, eucalyptus!, claims that it is quot;designed to aid fretboard speed and increase string lifequot;. My gnarled fingers don't seem to be moving any faster but the strings have a silkier feel and a bit less squeak.
The only item I have ever put on a rosewood fb is lemon oil. If the FB is real dirty which would be from the owner not cleaning the FB for a long time, I use steel wool to buff the whole board and then lemon oil.
Maple FB are a different story. IF the frets need a good cleaning/buffing tape off the FB because the steel wool will marr the finish on it. Let the finish on the board wear naturally it looks cool!
When you clean th board down with lemon oil use it sparingly and wipe it off quickly. If it is left on to soak it can cause the frets to loosen up!
I use lemon oil on my fretboards and it works great. On my rosewood neck though, I don't like the greasy feel of lemon oil so I use teak oil.
I should have added that you really NEED to clean the fretbord with methylated spirit or de-natarued alcohol (lighter fluid) to remove the beer/pizza/finger grot before applying any quot;tonicquot; to a non-maple fretboard.
It kills the quot;bugsquot; that your grimy fingers put there and slightly drys the wood so the whatever good oil you apply will soak in.
Deep is good but more often is better.
BTW, Lighter fluid is also called Naptha! Its perfectly safe for rosewood and Ebony boards and also about the best thing you can use to clean a fretboard! Keep it away from nitro finishes though!
