So I've been buggin some of you guys about a new amp. Well I settle on and now am the proud owner of a Hughes and Kettner Attax 100 head with midi module. I only payed 260 for it! Works perfectly fine however no footswitch so if you know where I can get one let me know. Here is my review of this amp.

Hughes and Kettner Attax 100 head

I was lucky enough that the other guitarist in my band has this same amp so we were able to see if they could sound identicle. Shure enough, with the same settings they did....
CLEANS- the cleans on this amp are just amazing. At a low volume they sound kind of ordinary but when this amp is cranked for our shows, the cleans stay clear and don't even distort one bit. The only time it will is if it's all the way up but then again every amp does at that volume.

Distortion- This model has 3 overdrive modes...crunch...lead...mode 2. The crunch channel is absolutely horrible, harsh, barely driven at all. I can't stand it for anything, definitely not for blues, too incredibly harsh. Lead channel is kind of like a middy early trash type of sound, not anything like a modern sound of course, it's not meant to be. It's very good and punchy but does not have much of that compressed thump sound to it. Mode 2 is the lead channel but modern sounding. This is where the amp shines. With mode 2 the voicing of the amp is scooped so using mids is a good thing. With mids up a little this amp shines like crazy. Oddly no matter how high you have the bass, it will not make my cab fart out, it just makes it very warm but too much will make it very muddy. One thing is this amp CANNOT sound harsh! I am not kidding here, mids and treble all the way up, stil isn't harsh. The Mode 2 has a very modern, compressed sound to it which somewhat reminds me of a lot of power metal band sounds. Since this amp is hybrid, at higher volumes you can tell there is something tube in there as it saturates the perfect amount and stays very warm.

Other- The reverb is nice but the amount of reverb you can dial in is minimal for some reason. There's an effects loop that can be turned of via the footswitch which is very nice if u want to leave your chorus pedal or ect on and near your amp, then control it on the footswitch with everything else. Whatever they cover these things in is horrible. It's a very pretty blue conver but it's kinda like some fuzzy material. If anything gets on it, you can't get it off to save your life. Who knows why they did that. At 260$ for this amp is a killer. Well worth a lot more. The sounds of this amp are an obvious mix of Mesa thump and crunch with a little line 6 compressed insane model dist. type of sound, minus the digital sound.

Thanks for the review. I use an Attax 80 combo @home and love it for that....

Btw, Any music store that´s worth that designation should be able to get you the original Hamp;K 3 button footswitch. But once again, gear questions and reviews go in the guitar shop, this is where we come to to GET AWAY from guitars and pickups. YOu´ll get more answers that way, too, because some people find it annoying when people post in the wrong room so they just don´t even answer at all.....
