Neil Young's repainted goldtop has a Gibson Firebird mini-humbucker installed in the bridge. According to his guitar tech the pup is so sensitive you can talk into it.
What I wanna know is which SD mini-hb would best sound like a red hot Firebird bridge pup?
Anyone got any ideas?

Welcome...I would guess that the Antiquity II FB would probably be a good bet. If you can find out how many 'k's' Neil's pickup is, that might help you figure out what to do.

I think I read someplace that Neil's tech wasn't able to recreate that pickup in the guitars he is using now so he uses P90's instead. Maybe I am wrong, though, so don't quote me.

My original Les Paul Deluxe pickups were like microphones! You could talk into them even after i got a good shop to pot them.... Screaming feedback.... perfect for Neil fans! I have bought a few different sets for mini replacements and the Duncan Mini's are cool sounding... They didn't have the look of a real LP Deluxe pickup so i bought some real Gibson replacements.... One of the Duncan minis i bought was the hot output one... 16k's i think.... it is good but bright....

Old Black - What wonders it has done! Was it used at all on Prairie Wind? Never saw it on the studio DVD... :-(

of the duncan minis i really like the seymourized version in the bridge. you can get a lp dlx style antiquity but i dont think there is any in the regualr line.

I'd say either the FB or SM3 (mini quot;Seymourizedquot; Hot) that others mentioned for that sound, but a microphonic pickup will have its own characteristics - along with the squeal, they also seem to produce more harmonics

I agree with the comment about P90s - I saw Neil last year on his quot;Greendalequot; tour, and when he wasn't using the old black LP, he used a Goldtop with P90s.

Actually, you can do this with any guitar pickup. Try it... crank up the gain, hold the pickup close to your mouth and yell.
