I Had installed the Hot Rod Humbucker set in my Les Paul on monday.... (sh-2n amp; sh-4b) although these are FANTASTIC pickups they just didnt suit my taste.... So I sold them to a buddy of mine.
I am planning on ordering based on what I have read a custom 5 for the bridge and a aph1n for the neck... what I was wondering was if this would be a good match.
I found the sh-4 to not have the low end I like and a bit to many highs.... although I love the drive....and the jazz was a little clear for lack of a better term.... so if anyone has any experience with these let me know. I will be putting them in a 1982 Gibson Les Paul Standard.
I personally think you will be very happy with that combo in your Les Paul. The C5 has the vibe and similar tone of the 59' with a tad more bass, highs and output. It's doesn't sound too hot or modern to my ears at all. I just recently had one in my 03' Standard, and It's probably going back in until I order my custom shop pup. Some people perceive the C5 as mid scooped, but it's really not. It's just that the lows and highs are slightly stronger. The weight and tone of your LP will balance it out nicely.
As for the APH....it's my favorite neck pickup of all time. It's smooth, articulate, clear and well balanced. I think you'll be really happy. Let us know how it works out.
Hey man, Welcome to the Forum!
I love the jazz neck, but I know what you are talking about when you say it sounds a little too clear. The A2P is a great bucker my heritage has one in the bridge actually. It will give you more mids in the neck and an even sound throughout.
The C5 is a souped up PAF. It will still have a lot of highs, but not like a JB. If the C5 doesn't do it for you look into the Custom, it has more mids than the C5 and more grind, with less highs.
For a bright guitar I usually recommend a Custom Custom. It has a ton of mids, we a round bass and smooth top.
Here's my write up on the custom series so you can compare and contrast what you like and dislike about the JB, its write up is on the bottom.
The Custom Series---The Custom Series is all on pup configuration but with different magnets. The coils are symmetrical and the pups come with Standard 4 Conductor wire
Custom---The Custom is a PAF kicked up a few notches. This pup gets its aggressive edge from its Ceramic magnet. This pup has lots of grind with good treble and midrange. It also has ample bass for palm mute playing.
Custom Custom---The Custom Custom is a midrange heavy pup that lends itself to leads and warming bright guitars. This pup gets its huge midrange from the Alnico 2 magnet. I has smooth bass and treble. Essentially it is an overwound A2 PAF.
Custom 5---The Custom 5 is a pup with an EQ very identical to The 59. It has thumping bass, scooped mids, and cutting treble. Like the 59 it is a bright pup that will liven up dark guitar, but the bass can be overwhelming in a bassy guitar, or the the treble overwhelming in a trebly guitar.
JB---The JB is in a class of its own. There is really no other pup like it. It has fair bass and lots of treble. This particular pup has a large upper mids spike that allow it to cut through the mix like no other. It can be heard on countless recording especially throughout the 80's. Lots of people like to pair it with a Jazz or 59 in the neck. In bright guitars it is usually soldered to a 250k pot just like the original Seymour made 30 years ago.

Thanks for all the info!!!
This board has been GREAT in helping me figure out what I want....
I searched through many threads and soaked in as much as I could about all the pickups I had intrest in by people who have actually used them. Thats so cool to be able to do because of all the choices you have in pickups and the little subtle differences between some of them.
I ordered the Custom 5 zebra and the aph-1n zebra from Guitar Heaven (a place I found out of Nashville on the site) and they should be here today.... very nice folks as well...
Ill let you know how they work out.....
