I was at Guitar Center the other day and decided to try out Schecters new C1 Elite (with duncan designs w/ covers). After trying that out i was really suprised and I decided to also play Schecters C1 Blackjack to compare...well I wasn't very happy with the sound I was getting from the JB that is in the bridge. This may sound weird but i think I like the duncan designed better than the USA Pups. The covered designed ones sounded clearer and more percise.

I need some imput.

No way, Dude
It must've been the music store amp.

Nope i made sure of that....I used the same amp that i own, bought it from them....I think that the pickup is just....better....could have been that it was covered too huh?

isnt the HB-102 based on the JB anyway? maybe a jb with a cover will sound just as good if not better

i own a schecter c-1 XXX which came with a duncan designed version of the JB. anyway, i used it for months with the hb-102 in it and was loving it. then i found a used like new '80s JBJ and put that in the bridge....NIGHT AND DAY...the guitar came alive and is much more clear and articulate now. i liked the hb-102 but i find the real JB to be a much better pickup IMO.

The jb seemed too quot;muddyquot; for me...I found the HB-102 to be very clear....I really liked that because I play a ton of coheed and cambria but I also play some punm/metal stuff too. more treble and a ton of bass the better for those styles

i also play a metal/punk mix with my band and trust me...if you spent more time with both pickups in the same guitar (not two different guitars) i'm pretty sure you'd change your mind. but hey, if you like the hb-102...go for it!!! schecters are great guitars all around, out of all my guitars my schecter XXX is still one of my top 3 favorites!oh also, i don't know much coheed but they aren't bad, i do know this though i was very upset with the singer when i heard a live recording of him doing quot;favor house...quot; he can't hit half of the notes he does on the CD. the sad part...i can pretty much nail that song vocally lol...i guess all those years of doing cartoon voices and singing 80s metal paid off lol. not a bad band though!!!

-Mike

also, forgot to say if your a big coheed fan, you may like the schecter hellraiser c-1 a bit better since it has and EMG 81/85 set and that's what the singer uses in his explorer if i'm not mistaken.

-Mike

Tone is such a subjective thing, for your uses the duncan designed (which from what i hear are good quality pickups) could well be better for what you want. Who cares what it says on the tin or how much it costs, if it sounds good, then it IS good.

Does it have a set neck/through body strings?

Oh, btw...do emgs work well with metal and punk?

It sounds like a winner. Way to go

Listen if YOU feel it sounds better than congrats on a great pup.
They are wound and spec'd to the originals so i am NOT shocked

if I remember correctly the HB-102 is based on the duncan distortion. Maybe you just like the sound of the distortion better than the JB

Xeromus, the 102b set is the JB bro
he HB-102 was modeled after Seymour's favorite humbucker the USA-made SH-4 JB™ bridge
this is from seymours site

the 103 is the DD version,
The HB-103 was patterned after the SH-6 Duncan Distortion™ . It uses a ceramic magnet and powerful coil windings to deliver a high output tone with lots of crunch and harmonics. The bridge pickup is Trembucker-spaced.

the 103 is the distortion set

yeah they work great for metal and punk that's why tons of metal and punk bands (and metal/punk mix) use them.

I wonder if those two guitars were made of the same wood? Anyway, the DD's in my Samick I posted a picture of recently aren't bad at all. I think Evan said once they were the 103's based on the Distortion.

There are so many things that affect tone. Cables, wood, pots (pots turned up or down, tone caps.)

The blackjack is a tele shape, right? Do they use 250 k pots in it? 0.22 uF versus 0.47 tone cap?

Do you know for sure those are the correct pickups? Did the guy at GC tell you? Lots of guys at guitar center have told me things that are flat out wrong.

i use an ibanez s470 standard and ive used a JBJ 80s model wound by marceil or whoever.... and ive used an hb103... which i actually have right now... i must say i like the HB103 much much better... the jb sounded rather boring as opposed to the HB103 which has a very very precise and awesome saturated sound.
