Looking to buy myself a bass guitar:
I would like it to be:
1) set neck
2) active pickups like EMG bass set
3) mahogany body

mu budget is up to 1k. What kind of Bass I can get for that money new or used.

Thank you All

Asgaroth

Why those specifications?

Generally speaking, mahogany set necked basses aren't exactly prized for their wide variance of tonal qualities.

It could be a bolt-on bass.

Why Mahogany? I wanted a deep but readable sound.
I'm open to any recommendations. This bass should sound well with heavy distortion guitar and acoustic guitar.

P.S. From what I've played I loved Music Man Sterling a LOT. And I did not like Warvick (don't know the model name) from the SamAsh.
P.S2. Mahogany bass was recomended to me by a friend of mine.

If you want a bass with a lot of versatility, the J-Bass gets my vote. It's not nearly what you described, but the tonal variety is fantastic.

Through the thrift shop, you could also probably build a bass from Warmoth parts for about $1K.

I honestly believe a Jazz Bass based instrument to be the best.

I totally love my Gamp;L L-2000. It's retired both my '79 Thunderbird and my '65 Jazz. It's versatile, solid as anything, and they're generally inexpensive used.

Seriously, a mahogany bodied bass won't ever brighten up. You can turn the treble down on Fender style basses, but you'll never get a snappy sound out of a Thunderbird.

Another Nod for the Gamp;L's I have a 1980 L-1000 that hands down is the
most solid bass I've ever played. A buddy who plays a warwick was blown
away by my Gamp;L. Leo Invented the P-Bass in 51' 30 year's later he perfected
it with Gamp;L. IMO

Carvin -- they make bolt-ons but their higher end models are neck-thru (the ultimate tenon/set neck). You pretty much have your choice of woods, though I don't know if they do mahogany.

My 6-string is very cool...

When I got it it was $840.

New.I'm no bass expert (this is my first), but I bought a Fender Zone bass this summer and it seems to be pretty versatile:

I have Carvin DC400 it is an excelent guitar. BUT pickups are disaster I did not like them at all (I gave it a good try). Now I have SD Jazz / Dimazrio Super3.

I would not like to swap pickups in a bass, if they have the same sound quality as in the guitar.
