Hi,
I have a Megadrive pickup, and I need to install it on an Ibanez RG550, but I just don't know where the blade coil goes. Should it go next to the bridge or in oposition to it? What is the standard position?
Thanks.
A what pickup? Is it produced by SD? Never heard of it, tough that doesn't say much... Maybe its from SEGA (sorry for the bad joke)!
Is it a bridge or a neck pup? If it has a screw coil that will be on the outside, if in the bridge slot the blade will be towards the neck, if in the neck slot the bade will be towards the bridge.
Neck
XXXXXX (screw coil)
_______ (blade coil)
Center of guitar (between both pups)
_______ (blade coil)
XXXXXX (screw coil)
Bridge
I'd wait for someone more knowledgeable to chime in.
EDIT: did a little research appearantly these are made by Dimarzio. From what I could gather they are to be used the normal way. However I read a few reviews where people liked them better with the blades towards the bridge (they were using a bridge pup to begin with).
I think maybe you could experiment with it and see what you like best. I don't think the way a pup is installed is written in stone and some people flip them and like them like that.
From the old Dimarzio FAQ:
Does it matter which direction I install my pickup?
Most humbuckers are symmetrical and their sound does not change at all when installed backwards, but some have a slightly different sound if you install them in the opposite direction from normal. It#8217;s not a matter of right or wrong, but a matter of taste for such a subtle difference, if you can hear the difference at all. Those models include the Air Norton#8482;, Air Zone#8482;, Evolution® neck, bridge and 7-string, FRED®, Humbucker from Hell#8482;, DLX Plus#8482; neck and bridge models, Virtual P-90#8482;, Blaze#8482; neck and bridge models and Tone Zone 7#8482;.The Steve#8217;s Special#8482;, the Bluesbucker® and the MegaDrive#8482; have distinctly different sounds if you turn them around, and there is no #8216;right#8217; installation direction. The Bluesbucker® is brighter-sounding with the adjustable screw coil towards the bridge, while the MegaDrive#8482; is brighter-sounding with the adjustable screw coil towards the neck. The Steve#8217;s Special#8482; is brighter-sounding if the coil on the pickup#8217;s cable exit side is toward the bridge.
I tried it with the bar towards neck and it sounded odd. I left the blade towards the bridge like most people.
