Help me decide on one of these 2 amps. I played the JSX and it sounded really good with a nice crunch and clean channel plus it`s at a local store around the corner from my house. All I`d have to do is pay for it and take it home plus it `s gonna be $75 cheaper than the Splawn. The Splawn Quick Rod is out of state , it`s an earlier version when the eqs were shared for clean and dirty. I haven`t played through one although 99% of what I read about them are positive. The Splawn also claims to get the elusive quot;Brown Soundquot;! Damn, I`m leaning towards the Splawn but I hate it when I haven`t played amp and then suprised at the sound it gets and I`m always worried about the item getting banged around in shipping.
Splawn!
By a long shot!
I wouldn't even compare the two.
Also going by your avatar...
Scott is a really cool and friendly guy, he knows his stuff.
Dirty Craig where are you!
I'm here man!
Dude, are you seriously asking me what I think? Oh my,,, have you heard the JSX? Check out the G3 DVD, Satriani's tone sounds like @ss. You'll be severely dissappointed if you buy that amp I think.
Go with the Splawn of course!
i like the jsx, i thought it sounded good, but i didnt think any of it (clean or dirty) sounded amazing. ive heard that the splawn heads with the splawn cabs actually do sound amazing.
Go with the splawn... if it doesn't work out, sell it, but there's no doubt it's a better sounding amp.
Of course I'm biased, but they do really sound amazing..

go with the splawn! a quick rod or pro mod is going to be my next amp i think. Scott knows what he's doing for sure! i love my splawn 4x12 cab and wouldn't trade it for any other cab on the market! there is just some magic to a splawn amp, it's what a marshall should sound like hehe.

Just to raise a point...
Satch used a PROTOTYPE of the JSX on that performance and I agree, it wasnt really up to par with what I usually hear from him. It was still better than his Marshall 6100, though.
He used the final versions on some very specific spots on Is There Love In Space? (he detailed what spots in GP magazine) and the tone on record from the final versions of the amp is much better than it was live on the G3 record. I also has the pleasure of seeing him live in February and his JSX's sounded nothing short of fabulous, and WAY better than his previous rig.
Just thought you'd appreciate the info.
And if you want my opinion, 51501984 should get the Splawn.
I found the JSX to be extremely average when I plugged into one. I had hopes it would be a more natural sounding amp than it was. I have owned an Ultra, Butcher, VTM and 5150 over the years and all have the metallic upper mid snizzle to them. I can't get them to breathe. From what I have heard clip wise the Splawn is just levels above for hard rockin tones. It ain't my preferred amp of choice but between these two I don't think it is even close.
I don't hate PV, I dig the classic line esp the delta blues amp.
Go Splawn.
To be honest, although I admire him as a player, I've never liked Satriani's tone. But I tried a JSX with an open mind and wasn't blown away. Nice enough amp, but nothing outstanding and quite fizzy on high gain settings.
Hmm... strange cause the JSX I tried at NAMM wasn't mindlblowing but it WAS one of the better tube amps I tried there. Certainly no fizziness or anything like that. I understand there were some initial problems with the first batch of them but that got straightened out quickly.
It's hard to get a good reading on tube amps when they're in a store that's not maintaining them properly. Whenever I tried a Stiletto I got all SORTS of different results before i heard a brand new, properly maintained one in a MESA Outlet store in Hollywood.

1 end of story
Dirrty Craig, awesome playing on those clips. That Splawn sounds like a much finer and more percise original Satch rig. But didn'y you also use a modded Boss DS-1 in those clips? Also, doesn't Joe run his Boss DS-1 into his JSX? I saw on his site that he still atleast has it on the pedal board..
Yeah, I think the tone he's getting on G3 (with Malmsteen) is the JSX amp; the DS-1. It's an awful, awful tone. Lucky his playing makes up for it . He does get a very nice clean sound out of that amp.
The JSX is probably a little more versatile, but the splawn seems to do the hot rodded marshall tone better than anyone else.

If you've ever played the JSX you'd know many tones sound nothing like that DVD.
The bottom line is the JSX can hang with pretty much any amp out there for rock/hard-rock....it does it's own thing more or less.

An SD-1, yes I did but only on the bluesy clip about halfway through it I kicked it on.
