Speaking of quot;most vintage strat soundingquot; single-coils. Fender, Dimarzio, or ?

Cheers Primo.

Kinmans!!!

Real passive alnico single coils with no hum. It's a no-brainer.

I just put a L290/280/280 set from and am impressed. They sound exactly like they're described. Best bang for the buck hands down. I think kinmans are about 3 times as much. But I guess if you have deep pockets...

I've just played some kinman-loaded guitars, don't have one :~

Haven't heard about those Lawrences before. I am aware that Bill Lawrence developed the quot;Fender'squot; Samarium Cobalt Noiseless pups. Gotta check'em out.

BTW, the SCNs are nice but not great pickups. They sound a bit weak (like any quot;vintage soundingquot; stacked humbucker), not a big trouble for middle and neck positions, but the bridge pup should be hotter, and I've experienced some tone issues when rolling down the volume pot, but nothing a high-pass filter can't solve.

There's a quot;Hot Noiselessquot; set from fender, loaded with ceramic magnets. Dunno if would solve the bridge weakness though.

Duncan has a new set coming that are supposed to be the absolute bomb according to guys like Lew

....and Bob.

Hi Bob

... and Curly

but I'll defer to Bob

I'll defer to Bob and Curly...

Can I be Frank?

Surely!

The 3 sets being brought up here are Kinmans, Lawrence and the new Duncans...the Kinmans are the most vintage strat sounding set, and what I mean by that is...weak all around output, but nice tone IF you like vintage Strats from say the middle 50's...they are very bright, the bridge is very icepicky, and IMO they lack any real punch. The lawrence 280's remind me of David Glimoure on a so, so day...most noiseless pickups seem to be lacking a certin topend sparkle, Bill has med these pickups so damn bright that you almost have to EQ the amp differently when using them...overall I was able to get some good tones out of them (not what I would call vintage mind you) but when I switched guitars I had to tweak the EQ again...and again, this set has an icepicky bridge (this was a set of 280's). The new Duncans are sure winners...very, very Vintae in tone, but not weak at all...very punchy, grea all around tone and NO icepicky bridge pickup...I;m gonna stop talking about these, Im not too sure Evan would like me talking aboutg them just yet...if you can wait on noiseless Strat pickups, wait for these...if you want a set taday get the Duncan Classic Stacks, they are the cklosest thing to the new Duncans. BTW...when I had the prototype Duncans I also tried the above mentioned Kinmans, Lawrence, a set of EMG, Lace Sensors, and Fender Noiseless (both the vintage and Hot)...

1 for Kinmans. Although I felt the bridge PUP was a little harsh, But much better overall than any other noiseless PUP I have heard.

When are the SD's supposed to be available? Im intreged!!! I'm definately not looking for bright-ice picky.

cheers Primo.

My favorites are the single-bladed Bill Lawrence L-250's. Great Strat tone in all positions, no hum. Have used them for many, many years.

Have heard some EMG's that sound nice too.

i spent a good long time talking one on one with the chief of engineering at duncan during UGD about the new noiseless pups .. .the engineering behind them is spectacular and i cant wait to hear them ... he didnt give availability info ... but i know that i'd wait to try them before deciding ...

and dont call me shirly

cheers

The set Christian tried is the same prototype set I own. I sent him that set on a prewired pickguard so he could check it out. Christian has great ears for tone, IMO! Sent the same set to Curly, Gearjoneser and would've sent it to STRATDELUXER but he's a lefty and would have had to unsolder and remount everything so he passed. Lew

That means alot to anybody that plays, comming from anybody that plays, but comming from you it means even more!

I have a noiseless set in my Strat...Lace 6k Hot Gold in the bridge, Lawrence 280S in the middle, and Kinman AVN-62 in the bridge. I'm interested in hearing the new Duncan models, but I'm very happy with this set. My opinion is that, in a 3 pickup Strat, you really need to match the proper pickup with the proper position. That sounds like obvious advice, but what I mean is that a neck model of a certain pickup might sound great, but the bridge model of that same pickup might not. I love the Kinman in the neck position, but I'm not sure I'd want it in the bridge. The Lace works very well in the bridge, but it might be too muddy in the neck. Then again, my Strat is a bit atypical due to the thick wenge/ebony neck, jumbo stainless steel frets, custom wiring setup, etc...so you have to keep in mind that what sounds great in my guitar might not necessarily sound great in a traditional Strat.

Do you guys remember the early '90s PRS EG-3 model? They were fitted with 3 split-coil Fralins, minibucker-sized I believe. Those were nice!

I almost got one 3 years ago. The pawnshop guy asked $1300 (ok, it was a fine one - mint condition, flame top, OHSC, blah blah blah...), the scorpion in my pocket bit me and I quit :~

Anyway, PRS doesn't produce alder body guitars anymore... that's sad.
