I just called the guitarist for my band and offered to play bass instead of drums. We've had no success in finding a new permanent bass player.I can use a bass, but if I used my 7 string, then I might be able to do more interesting things.I love the idea of a charlie hunter 8 string. What would I need to do to my 7 string to use the lowest two notes of the E and A of a bass? It's tuned AEADGBE right now. The A string is an 80. The E string is a 52.

What is the scale length of your guitar?

I had a Yamaha Drop 6 (baritone 6 string w/ 26.5quot; scale) that I tuned an octave low using a 60 for the A and a 74 for the E.

I bet that 80 will get you there, provided you adjust your right hand attack (ie, ease up!)

It can do E, but the intonation is all messed.

Yeah... short scales suck for low tunings. It's pretty dumb that they used 24.75quot; for something with a low B anyway, but oh well.

Tune it back to standard and try an octave pedal, or better yet, a Whammy pedal. Those things are just way stupid fun! I've got the newest model (the reissue of the original), and I've heard a lot of people ***** about how awful it sounds, but I have no complaints. It'll drop you an octave and track amazingly well.

i've never seen a 7-string les paul
whats the headstock look like?

Dude, they're crazy! It's V shaped, like a Dean.

Weird, eh?
Ok, that's not true. It looks like a normal Lester, but has an extra tuning peg on one side.

There's nothing worse than a bass player that sounds like he's a guitar player trying to play bass...

Please...keep to the classified ads....

Yeah, don't try to be innovative or anything

Oh, yeah... tell Charlie Hunter to get rid of that stupid thing he plays, too. He'd be way better if he just played guitar and had another dude playing bass.

It's not as much as being innovative or not but more to the point that there are few things worse than a guitar player that believes that since he knows the mechanics of the instrument he can play it.

Playing bass is more than just fretting the right note at the right place at the right time. It's about groove, it's about working WITH the drums, it's about creating an environment and vibe.

...and most guitarists know about as much about that as quantum physics.

So...am I correct in stating that since your skill level is on par with Charlie Hunter?

And if so, why are you asking these questions rather than actually working AS a musician?

And inherently, since you seem to have all the answers already...why not just have your own Charlie Hunter 8 string built?

I agree that most guitarists who pick up a bass (for the first time) get humbled pretty quickly. However, why should that stop him from potentially learning some bass skills?

I fail to see the relevance of any of this. Your above statements are in response to a post of mine, yet I was not the one asking questions. Not to mention, the first sentence doesn't even make sense. Let's assume for a second it does... Nobody mentioned anything about being on par with Charlie Hunter, or the desire to own one of his guitars.

I actually do have experience playing bass and I would like to think I have a tasteful sense of what works and what doesn't. Having the high four or high five strings of a guitar would be useful more for various weird bits in our songs, and they would not be something I'd use often.

I'm a drummer even more than a guitar player, so I do know a thing or two about groove and working with the drummer.

Will warmoth do that sort of headstock though? I thought the only ones they offered for 7 string were Hamer-ish.

There are lots of bands that don't have bass players....you just have to be a little unconventional. Using the short scale you may not be able to the octave levels of a bass, but if you go through a bass head and some 15s you may be able to get some nice rumbling goin on.
