I just took my strings off for some fretboard maintainence, and I noticed that the bridge and tailpiece are not fixed tightly - they rattle around when touched. I haven't noticed a problem when the strings are on, but I'm wondering whether they should be left like that or if they should be tightened somehow.

Heres a pic of the bridge and tailpiece if that's any use:It is normal for a quot;tune-o-maticquot; style bridge and tail piece to be loose when you take the strings off, the tension holds them in position. Your lucky that the bridge pieces didn't fall out! The older types did and many a guitarist would drop to the floor looking for that little bit of metal, then the fun of trying to restring the guitar and remembering where it sat so the intonation is right/ or close enough.

The quot;problemquot; can be fixed with a tonepro's bridge, Phil at Syndal Music can do this with his eyes shut( well nearly). Maton are the Aussie importers.

You can of course try wedging them in postion by screwing everything tight but they really aren't meant to be set that way.

aah ok, I'll leave it be. They seem to be held so that they are loose but can't come right off

thanks

dammit... I just bumped the bridge height adjustment thingy... now the action's going to be off

should I just put the strings back on and re-adjust the action then?

Glad I could help out. My Strat doesn't have that problem and that's why I play one as all the guys at high school had LP or SG copies and bits just keep falling off when they tried the EVH string bends and of course broke strings ie bridge saddles going every where.
