Well i made the plunge and bought a used MIM tele standard... It was cheap and it had some nice upgrades!!!! It has a new Gotoh vintage tele 3 barrel bridge and a white Pearloid pickguard added to it.... Very cool!!! It has some nice tones for a cheap tele!!!! Roll the tone back it sounds like it has a P90 in it...... It has the Tele twang... Much nicer of a guitar then i expected... I bought it mostly because i want to make a router template of a tele body so i can make early 80's Shecter Townshend style copies... So i wanted the tele body to copy and the headstock and heal shape...

Even though the tele was cheap i still need to off set some of the cost by selling some stuff... Now i have to figure out what.... whatever i sell will not be much... Just some junk i never use.

PS it is a 1999 Metalic Purple tele with an all maple neck.... a Mexican Standard model .... for a cheap tele it rocks

Pics!! And your stressing quot;for a cheap telequot; man..Mexican Fenders can kick just as much ass as an american.

Pics. NOW.

The 3-barrel bridge is an essential upgrade IMO. And yeah, the Mexican Fenders are worthy of mucho respect.

Saddly i can't post a photo... no digital camera yet... I have been playing it tonight and it has a lot of tone.... It has a nice bottom end to it that i have been looking for in a Fender with Single Coils... I have 3 Mexican Strats and they do not sound as nice as this tele. I knew Teles had a twang to them but the bottom end on this guitar is surprisingly great!!!. I'm still coming to terms with the tele bridge shape as it is in the way of my picking hand but it will be better after spending some time with it. I knew a tele would agree with me...

Thinking of taking one of my Mexican strats in to sell so i can off set the cost of this tele... I got the tele for $340 Canadian... $390 after tax... Pretty good concidering the upgrades on it. I'll use the tele much more then i'll ever use that strat i may sell... There is a few things i could sell... But for now i know i have a nice tele!

It is a metalic Purple with a white pearloid pickguard.... if i could post a photo i would for sure... This guitar is killer.

Cool to hear of more fans of the MIM Standard Telecasters!! Mine is a sunburst 2003 and to be honest i like it as much, if not more, than any of the other Teles i've played! And keep in mind that mine is 100% stock too. It just feels good to me, and it has that thin, biting, twangy, country lead tone that i really really love about Telecasters. It also has the other important factors that a good tele should have.... a nice medium weight, 5-7 pounds. Not a back breaker but also no featherweight. It has an amazing amount of sustain for a guitar in this price range. There is also some sweet grain pattern goin on thats on the front AND the back of this guitar.

I've always wanted something old and US made to have as a main guitar, but the more time i spend playing this guitar, the more i realize that i already have everything i need in a quot;number onequot; guitar.

Did i mention that it actually does better than my 50's RI Esquire? Well, it does! FenderBender

This is something most people don't talk about when discussing Tele tone, but it's definitely a big reason why they sound so good. They are beefier and more resonant than most Strats.

Dude, is that one a Top-load bridge or string-thru body?

I'm trying to figure out when they switched. I have 2 MIM Tele's, one top load and one String-thru.

Awesome guitars.

Glad you like yours!

Look me up if you decide to sell the body/neck.

Congrats!....Teles rule in the Fender Kingdom, IMO...they are just more quot;ballsyquot; than a strat...more attitude

Mine is a 1999. string thru bridge design. I was worried that the 3 barrel Gotoh bridge that the past owner added would not intonate, but after playing it thru a loud distorted amp it plays in tune rather well. I have seen the Top Load Mexican Teles you are talking about.... Not for me.... I like the string thru idea.....

Ya it has a tone i have been looking for in strats... i've been looking in the wrong place... I'm thinking selling off one of my MIM strats to pay for this tele. I do not think i'll miss it... It's not a great sounding strat by any means... But this Tele on the other hand is really cool sounding... First Fender guitar i will leave stock electronics and use the Tone controll on it...

Question for you techs and tele lovers.... The 3 barrel tele bridge sounds amazing on this guitar i got... But i was wondering how does such a bridge design still allow the guitar to stay playing intonated pretty well? What are the tricks of setting up a vintage style 3 barrel tele bridge? I was expecting it to sound a little out when playing it but it sounds great.

I'm not a big fan of 3-barrel bridges, but i do like vintage style Telecasters and i've learned to like them on those guitars. On my 50s RI Esquire, i switched to the brass saddles instead of the smaller steel ones it came with, so i took it to a local tech to have it intonated and he bent the screw on the middle saddle just a little bit to the right to acheive a quot;compensatedquot; effect. This seems to have a pretty good effect on the overall intonation as i can't really tell any intonation differences from my other six saddle guitars.

Just my two cents Hope that helps in any way

I have a top loading Mexican Tele from 1994. That thing plays SWEET and I've found the top loading design to make it a bit more playable as the strings aren't nearly as stiff as on a string through design. I thought about drilling this one out for string through, but after comparing the two, I stuck with top loader.

There are a number of companies that make compensated saddles for a tele... check on ebay or visit from : localhost/serious tele players prefer the top load bvridges because of those string tension issues and a few players use guitars that have the lower strings through the body and the plains top loaded.

If you go to the Duncan home page, then click on quot;Supportquot;, then on quot;Tech Tipsquot;, the very first one is Jerry Donahue telling how to set up a Telecaster 3-saddle bridge.

Or . . . follow this link . . .

Techtips

No need to justify it with stories about templates.....just keep feeding the GAS monster!!! YES! hahahaha
