hi

i'm proud owner of a gibson les paul studio. it plays and sounds great, but actually its a little bit to bassy. now i'm looking for a brighter quot;glamrockquot; tone.

the main problem is, i don't want a pup with a to high output. i think it would kill this special gibson character.

I think the JB is the way to go for hair metal tone... and most tones from the 80's for that matter. What else do you have in the way of gear (amp, effects, etc)?

Maybe the Demon? I'ts got good mids, not high output. The JB would be my first suggestion though.

Full shred in the neck and bridge. I love these pickups for 80's glam. The Full shreds are medium output.

First of all WELCOME TO THE FORUM!

For the bridge, as was said previously, most stuff in the 80's was recorded with JB loaded guitars. The JB has a large upper mid spike which really cuts through the mix, and has less bass than the 498T. That said I didn't like it in my Heritage. (same body construction etc as LP) It sounded too shrill and icepicky for my ears. I went to an A2P bridge pup. It gives me a PAF tone with great string to string definition with smooth highs and lows.

For the neck I'd suggest another A2P or a Jazz (that's what I've got in my neck slot). The jazz is a slightly brighter pup with great articulation, it sounds good clean, dirty, single notes, or chords.

So is there any particular guitarist you are trying to emulate? Steve Clark and sometimes George Lynch are the only LP slingers I can think of from the 80's right now.

Full shred isn't a bad pick, but I don't tend to think of it as a medium output pup. I would consider the Screamin Demon a medium output pup. It does the 80s metal sound beautifully, although I've never played one in a Les Paul, so I'm not quite sure how the two react to eachother.

The JB also nails the hair metal tone, but it is a high output pickup. If you're looking to retain the quot;Gibson characterquot; (IMO, PAF), I'd lean towards the Demon.

Screamin Demon for your style all the way. JB would work nice also.

If I remember right it was Ben who said they don't jive well in an LP.

I used an A2P through all the hair daze, works perfectly and certainly retains the guitars basic characteristics. The JB was real popular but not my thing, don't know much about the Demon or Full Shred sorry.

Hairmetal = JB/Jazz OR JB/'59

My suggestion would be go with the JB/Jazz. The JB humbucker is perfect for the 80's metal.

1 on the JB/Jazz. It will be pretty bright.

The Pearly Gates also does a good job of Hair Metal when you boost it.
