Hello all, listen, I'm new to this whole guitar painting business. I got an older schecter (A-1) and I sanded all the paint off with 120 grit sandpaper. I'm gettin the color and clear coats applied professionally, but I have to prome it myself. My question is, what primer do i use, and where do I get it (i would prefer to use an aerosol if possible) any advice a big help.

Check out reranch.com's forum and FAQ. They've got a ton of info and can help you with any part of the process. You can also buy all the paint/primer/supplies you need.

Don't forget to seal it before you put the primer on. The sealer will fill in the grains of the wood so the primer doesn't soak into the wood.

Reranch's FAQs are fantastic. All kinds of supurb information.

Reading through reranch I'm thinking of repainting a project guitar...

I've refinished several guitars myself using Reranch products with great results. The last guitar I refinished, I used Dupont auto paint aerosol cans which is acrylic lacquer that you can get at Kragens and other auto parts stores. I then clear coated it with Deft aerosol nitro lacquer that is available at Lowe's. That also produced great results and was a lot cheaper.

Just be careful with the finishes. If you go through Reranch then you are safe cause all of his aerosols are nitro lacquer. Want you want to avoid is mixing finishes. It's alright to spray nitro lacquer over an acrylic lacquer base color, but if you spray nitro over an enamal paint it will melt and lift it. I found that out the hard way. Sometimes it is hard to tell from the spray cans but just read the back to find out if it is Lacquer or Enamel.
