hey folks

just a quick post about the bass i bought for my wife from rondo music ... short scale J-bass copy ... it cost $110 US $20US for a gig bag and $15 US for shipping via fed ex from NJ to MD ...

very well packaged for shipping ... double boxed, with inner box having cup-shaped foam inserts to support the neck !! ...

finish is very nice, frets finished nicely, nut is cut 'ok', but not remarkably good ... knobs seem to have a tiny bit of rattle that you can only hear when playing unplugged ....tuners very smooth and seem to hold tune well ... bridge is small mass, but smooth operating with no rattles or snags in adjustment ... strings unremarkable, but new and reasonably snappy ...

action was nice, with no buzz

2 J-type pickups are non descript .. certainly good enough for her to hear herself as she learns ... not sure if SD bassline J-type replacements will fit the pickguard/body route or not ... data sheet suggest that the SDs are a tiny bit too big ... more careful measurement needed before deciding ...

HORRIBLY intonated ... EVERY string was 50 cents or more sharp at the 12th fret ... took me the better part of an hour to get it to within 5 cents (it was after midnight, i'll get it nailed tonight) ... i guess this is one of the steps where they save money to be able to sell it so inexpensively ... would be a real shame for someone to buy one of these and be frustrated in how out of tune it sounds up the neck if they didnt know how to do an intonation adjustment ...

should be fun as she gets started learning ... she already wants to play quot;Policequot; tunes ... it's good she's motivated, but she'll learn soon enough that we have to crawl before we walk .. running is for another day

cheers

Very cool! Only more fuel for my Agile GAS...

Glad you wife enjoys her new Bass'o... and yes.. the intonation is very bad on most cheap, but also on not so cheap guitars...
