oookay! so, im putting a killswitch in another one of my guitars but i have heard of two different ways of wiring it...( there could be more...if you know of a way feel free to drop it in here )
1) A normally closed button switch that's connected to the hot and the ground wires coming from the pickup - on press the pickup signal is instantly grounded hence the sound is quot;killedquot; whilst the button is pressed.
2) A normally open button switch that's put as a break along the hot wire (black, I think) to the output jack. On press the signal is open so no current will pass along hence sound is momentarily quot;killed.quot;
and im curious which one you guys would do ?
I'm more curious as to why you want a kill switch on your guitar?-Most of the 'silent' cords and kill switches out there work by shorting hot to ground, I don't think I would put a switch inline with my hot signal, as you may induce unwanted hums and buzzes, and pops.
im writing a solo with a staccato effect and aside from turning the vol down on my neck and up on my bridge and switching between the two, i have no other ways of making a staccato effect, and while this method is not fast enough ( or versatile enough, for that matter ) id like to install a killswitch. would you have a diagram of the way described ? ( shorting hot to ground )
if it's a dual humbucker guitar with two volumes, you can do this easily by turning bridge volume to zero and flipping the 3 way from center to neck.
yeah, thats what im doing now ( mentioned above ) but thats a bit of a pain because i switch between my two pickups often :-\ so killswitch = better for me
You have 1 and 2 backwards. #1 would require a normally open switch, and #2 would require a normally closed.
Using a normally open switch, wired across the two terminals of the output jack, would be the better way to do it. I think. Haven't done it myself.
(Except by accident once.)
i see why you would use a NO switch in the #1 thing but i dont know how i would wire that into my guitar because if i stuck a NO switch across the terminals wouldnt nothing flow through and give me more of a dead guitar unless i was pressing a button ( which i cant do cause i dont have 3 hands ) :-\ ? maybe im understanding it wrong
