i have a MIM strat and with a hot rails in the bridge and stock pups in neck and middle. i dont really like the hotrails and was wondering how a set of fat 50's would sound in my strat. i play mostly classic rock, southern rock, and blues. thanks
I think the Fat 50's are great, probably the most under-rated Strat single coils ever made. They are thick, solid and sweet and chimy all at the same time. You will love them.
I had them in a Strat and liked them a lot - good solid strat sound. They're dark for vintage-output strat pickups, which still ain't dark.
I use a Fat 50 middle and neck with a Fralin SP43 I got from Lew...I Like the Fat 50s..They have a bit more mids, they do have chime still and they drive a bit harder w/out being too harsh like the Texas Specials.
I have this combination in my mid 80s American Std. alder bodied strat...They are great pickups and I've not removed them and that's proof right there.. ;o)
Great pickups. And the bridge isn't overly bright, when you simply back the Delta-tone pot back to 8.
The thing that's great about them is their woody, SRV, gustly blues character, especially the killer neck pickup. They're Alnico 5, but have a depth and fatness, which is easy to love. Fender Custom Shop often mates them with a 59 or JB in HSS guitars. I think they sound best with a 59 or C-5 in HSS setups.
I added some extra coil wire to my set (0.3k on the neck and 1.0k on the bridge) and it really sounds great now. (Look for a thread called My Wacky Weekend Winding adventure for info on this -- and for some laughs...)

Great description. These are nice pups. I've had them for about 6-years and still love them. They're the best Fender has to offer.
I put a set in my Strat not too long ago after trying numerous sets of pickups. My Strat was originally a Fat Strat. I unFatted it and am glad I did. The Fat 50's sound great for all the types of music I play. And they're surprisingly quiet.
from : localhost/some sound clips on there, I didn't listen to the mactually, thought I'd post it here first.
OK, I listened, this guy seems to have VERY little gain, and doesnt seem to have it turned up so it sounds thin, aw well.
Hey - I actually have Fat 50s clips. - These are actually all bridge pickup.
