I've never seen a wine red Studio firsthand and I always assumed that it was a solid color finish. When I looked at the one posted on the Elderly Instuments website it shows translucent with some beautiful grain underneath. Is that normal?

Yes. At least with the newer models. I had a 2002 model and it was nicely grained.
my buddy has a 93 that is transparent also.
Our lead singer has on older Les Paul Studio in Wine Red, and it is translucent. I believe its a 90's model, but I'm not positive.
yes, mine was the same way. It is not a solid finish.
I can't stress how much I love my LP studio!
I'm pretty sure that all of the wine red pauls were translucent. I havn't seen any that were solid . . .

Wine red is transparent and is just about the only LP Studio color that is transparent on the back and neck as well. I love my '03 wine red LP Studio, too.
My 95 LP std is Wine and trans.
I have seen solid cherry and other reds before but it's not a common production color to the best of my knowledge.

I would agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (me = 1990 Gibson Les Paul Studio owner)
Back to the topic, my 1990 wine red studio is translucent, with a beautifully tigered neck (which I believe might have been intended for another guitar)
anyone else have a tigered neck (on a studio)? mine is incredible
Wine red has always been translucent, my Ex had a ´73 (?) LP Custom in Wine red that I to this day want back
LP studio '96 wine red = translucent.
For me, with the gold hardware as I got, this is the best looking gibson ever.
wine red has always been that way jump!
from the deluxes and customs from the early 70's to now ...

The EX, or the LP?
My 93 wine red studio is trans and has real nice grain showing on it. That's the reason I chose it back in 93 over the white one that they had in the guitar shop. It's hard to photgraph that guitar and get it show however. Alot of times, if you don't have a good camera and flash, it will end up looking almost black and solid instead of translucent.
Don't I feel like the dumb ass! Thanks everybody for the info......by the way that's trans wine red right? LOL!!!
All the pictures in musicians friend are very misleading. I saw one at guitar center and it is definetely not the same guitar.
