i am getting excited dear forumites. It seems that I am getting close to mount a band, or a weird orchestra should I say. It's been a while.
Biggest problem so far, we are 5 guitar players .
But one of us can play violin, and another is actually playing a luth, which is a bit different then the guitar.
Apart from a drummer, we also miss a bass layer... which I could be ok to do if I can save some money and find a good bass without sucking all the content of my bank account.
So if you have some advice on good value for money basses, now is the time.
I almost forgot, an electric bass would imply a new amp... so I was thinking of an acoustic bass could also be a solution, whichever could be cheaper actually. More suggestions?
i recently got a spector legend series 4-string, and its damn nice. most places theyre around $550, which isnt bad at all for the quality. schecter also makes good quality basses for cheap too
and i dont know anything about bass amps or acoustic basses but i cant help you there.
You cannot beat the old MIJ Guitar Logo Charvels for sound and quality for the money. They're cheap on ebay.
As far as amps, the GK 400RB or 800RB is still cheap as hell and sound good too.
I'm a guitar player myself, but recently went looking for a bass for recording. After playing a million basses, I settled on a used MIM Fender Jazz. It simply had a great feel, very nice action, and a traditional sound (meaning 70's rock) that was very pleasant. A good all around bass that compared favorably against basses costing twice, if not three times as much.
Good Luck
Music Man SUB or Sterling Bass SUB MIM Fender Basses are the best bass value for the dollar right now. They're not the best but they're definitely useable. You need at least twice the amount of wattage as the guitar players to be heard. If in doubt, go four times!
I'd say score a Jazz or one of the Gamp;L Tribute L-2000. For an amp, the GK 800RB used to be one of the standards. They're all over the place and you can pick them up for cheap. I used one as my main amp for for around 4 years. Be careful with impedance matching- they will blow if you match your impedance wrong. Also, get a bass cab that'll handle at least 400w. Trust me.
Thanks for the comments guys... apart for the Music man basses that are way to expensive.
I already played a bass, it was a long time ago when I first tried to jam with some friends. We managed to get from a friend of a friend a Fender bass, can't really remember the model, but damned! The thing was so heavy. I mean, I am used to play my les pauls, which aren't supposed to be lightweight guitars. But gee, this thing was some kind of heavy wood stick.
Am I the only one to feel this way? Is it known that Fender basses are heavy? Or are basses just more heavy than guitars in general?
After more research, 2 axes caught my eye: a Fender electro-acoustic bass BG 32, and a Peavey Cirrus BXP. Anybody already played these beasts?
Our last bassist had a 6 string Brice bass off of Rondomusic and that thing sounded better than anything I've ever heard, and was only 400.
I wouldn't say either Fenders are heavier, or that basses are heavier. It depends on what wood you've got there.
The Peavey Millenium series bases are inexpensive, play well and they have hum cancelling pickups
Here's a link to the info page. Price is nice too!
