Hey guys, I am looking to replace the pups in my RG7620. Here's what I am looking for in tone...

bridge: right now, the bridge pup seems to not have a whole lot of percision, accuracy, edge and focus. I am looking for more in each of these areas. When I solo on the B and E strings, it seems as though the bridge pup doesn't quot;graspquot; the distortion and keep it focused. It feels slightly buzzy. I dont care about cleans with this pickup.

Neck: I am looking for something with a lot of focus and compression, but not cheesey compression. I want a neck pickup that has a lot of clearity and accuracy for fast neck soloes like Petrucci/Vai. This pickup would be used for all of my clean passages as well. I want the output to be simliar to the bridge, not the exact same, but I want it to only be slightly lower. I dont want to much of a difference.

I know it is going to be harder to find pickups for my RG because it is a seven string, but let's here it! And are there seven string versions of the Dimarzio Evolution? If so, I think I would go with a pair of these hands down for right now. I have heard great things about the Full Shred, but im not sure if there is a seven string model out there. I think a seven string JB in the bridge and if possible seven string Full Shred in the neck would make a good match.

P.S. I am playing through a Mesa Boogie Mark III Simul Class .

I don't want to go the active pickup route either, I don't want to push the clean channel that much.

i put a JB in the bridge of my 7621, but then i can't do without the clean tones.. thought about the custom 7?

Come on guys, help a forum brotha out!

I've got a Schecter 7-string (semihollow) with the Duncan Designed
pickups, basically a Jazz n and JB bridge. The jazz really is
a nice neck pickup, bluesy with distortion : wide and flat dynamic
range clean, and a nice split tone too. If there is a flaw it may be
that it is on the verge of too hifi.

Sounds like you are after something a little crunchier but I don't
think a really heavy neck pickup will work well with the seventh
string. You might think of a bridge pickup from a vintage set (jazz,
59, etc) in the neck position to get a little more crunch.

I like the JB for all the reasons that some may not like it, it has some
punch and a mid-range spike that gives it a very vocal quality. I like
to do ersatz 6-string bass licks on the low strings and it gives a
pretty good twang, but also makes nice clean mixes with the neck, and
sings distinctively on solos.

the jb is sweet pickup if you're willing to accept its differences from proper 'metal' pickups- the EMG 81, and to an extent the custom.. it has great cleans, sounds very aggressive and pissed off, and downtunes beautifully.. i would definitly reccomend heavier strings with the JB, nothing lighter than 10s with the 762x ibanezes..

also, have fun with your new axe, i got mine in white and the paint's really starting to get knocked off careful with it!

I put a Custom/Jazz pair in my old RG1527. The result was exactly what you described. I'm not sure about the route in the RG7620, but the 1527 has a shallow pickup route which required trimming the ends of the pole pieces down a bit. The result was a stronger magnetic pull making the pickups slightly hotter.

How well does the Jazz handle high gain though? Do they make a seven string version of the Jazz? The custom is easily achieved.

I'm pretty sure all the quot;normalquot; humbuckers (everything but Seth and
antiquity) come in 7 string versions.

My hunch is that to keep the low B distinct with the neck pickup, you
want to avoid alnico II magnets, as a softer bass response may lose
some distinction.

I don't do really high gain but think the jazz n may be a bit shrill
if you are EQed for a really meaty bridge pickup. Thats why I
thought that a bridge pickup may be better for the neck position,
as it would have a little less highs and more volume to get the
balance you mentioned. The 59 is more scooped than the jazz.

I have not mentioned Pearly Gates or Distortion necks because I
have never played them.

They do make a Jazz 7 string. I've been looking at one for the neck of my 7621. Whatever they put in the neck (air norton?) does not have a clean tone I like.

The Jazz stays very articulate under high gain.

This is a 7 string???707's?

I heard the 707's rule all... I really want a 7 string with 707's.

I've been waffling about going to EMGs but I like the distorted sound I get form the Blaze II in the bridge. I don't like the neck pup though.
