There's always talk on here about swapping out various magnets for different new sounds. Usually this involves humbuckers - I haven't heard about people doing it with P90s.

Here's my question - what would happen if I took the ceramic magnet out of my Hot P90 and replaced it with the Alnico 5 from a Vintage P90? I imagine it would just sound like a hotter vintage pup (which would be cool).

I have both of these pups so it won't cost me anything. Should I give it a shot? I haven't done any magnet swapping yet - am I gonna screw anything up by attempting this?

Thanks,
- Cheeze

Don't P90s have two magnets? I was wondering recently what it would sound like to have a mixture (say Alnico 2 and 5), and whether mixing magnets could hurt the magnets in some way.

I too have pondered this. I've asked the Q, but no one has really had a definitive response yet.

I know for a fact, though, that the size of the ceramic magnets in the Duncan Custom Soapbar are not the same as normal sized alnico bars. So that may make things very tricky.

i think a hybrid A5/A2 Soapbar would be SO rad. I have a feeling though, that the different magnetic pull of each magnet would have some sort of negative effect.

Hmmm - I hadn't even thought of mixing them, nor have I compared the sizes of the bars. It's the Hot, not the Custom - I don't know the difference in the ceramic bars between the pups.

I was thinking of removing both ceramics from the Hot and replacing with both A5 from the Duncan Vintage...

Hopefully someone has some insight into doing this... anyone???
