I believe this is going to be the pup I slap in my Firebird...been throwing around alot of choices even though I'm fairly happy w/ the stock Gibsons.

I was ready to go with a Custom which I'm very fam with in explorers and pauls....but then I heard the DD in a Firebird and it sounded quite nice...tones sim to what I'm looking for...(late 70s/early 80's hard rock/metal..check my sig for an idea)..again tho..the Custom may get me there too based on my experience.

For those who have done some A/B of the Custom amp; DD in the same guitar...what is your take?

I figger cleans are not gonna be so great (for either really)...but I usually drop the vol knob on the guitar for that, or play in middle or neck pup pos...what's a good match in the neck for the DD? I suspect a 59 may not have enough output/match up well...I don't want a quot;distortion classquot; pup for the neck something a bit more vintage/59-like...

Thank You in advance.

P.S. Nickel cover DD's hard to come by?

I would say the DD is more toward a emg 81 output wise but the custom has a more balanced tone and a bigger low end for sure
when i play each of my guitars the meanest sounding is the zakk sig(of course!LOL)
the next in line is the new lone star strat with the custom in it
the lester with the DD is mean but it does not have the tone the custom has
if i had to i would say the dd tonally looks like this,
bass 5
low mids 6
upper mids 8
treble 9
output 400MVCustom would look like this
bass 7
low mids 6.5
upper mids 5
treble 9
output 365MV

it is more of what you are looking for?
more lows than upper mids?
more output?
more harmonics? better cleans?

I have to admit even though i love both duncan the EMG 81 is STILL my favorite

Actually quite a nice breakdown (re: the EQ). Thank You

I am looking for the easy pinch harmonics...cleans not so much. Low mids and tight low end without sounding boomy/bassy..but not alot of high mids like the JB. The Custom basically gives me all those things, but the DD sounded a bit smoother in the top end/high mids than the custom..less..erm..quot;grainyquot;...

Well the DD and Custom both have good lows, the custom is more quot;boomyquot;\
without a doubt it has a bigger bass and deeper low mids
so i would say go DD in you guitar?
I mean really you can t lose THEYARE BOTH GREAT!

Thanks WL. I never found the custom quot;boomyquot;..I guess what I meant by quot;boomyquot; is that I'm not looking for the quot;roundquot; very bassy type sound of a 59 or C5. I prefer the more quot;evenquot; bass response of the Custom...high and low bass frequencies are rolled off a bit.

Still decidin...sigh
