A while ago screamingdaisy PM'd me about having a custom selector ring made for his Les Paul.No problemo, have done it a few times.
The first one we made out of aluminum, not good for paint adhesion,(ouch!!)
The next one we made from brass, sprayed a thin flat black enamel and lettered it.
Originally I was going to hand carve the words in gothic script so it would be gold lettering on flat black, didn't look good.
So then it was plain Italic lettering on black, looked decent.Went to apply a thin coat of wax to seal it.as I was burnishing the wax it ate the paint right off,but left the lettering,(yes,I'm a loser)
He was super cool about it,but I still feel like a shnuck.Well they say third times a charm, live and learn.I think from now on I'll just stick with plastic
Should you have allowed the paint to dry before applying the wax coat? Or maybe you did it, or it wasn't necessary, or I am an ignorant, which is true...
I had very similar issue once, practically the same thing...... What I then did in the end was use gold rub-on on black plastic and clearcoated that... he wanted a quot;brushed aluminumquot; effect, so I went at it with some 600 or so grit sandpaper before I lettered and cleared it and some steel wool afterwards..
