First off, let me say that John is a class act and a hell of a nice guy! That being said, I opened the box and pluged in to my practice rig in the garage, an Ampeg AX70 and played with my Washburn NX6. Had to get in there quick before the wife yelled quot;Dinner!quot; First impresion: I'm blinded, all I can see is cool blue! Wow what an LED. You can actually use this thing for stage lighting during your ripping solos! I love bells and whistles. Plug in, Whats the first thing we(probably only me) do? Crank the gain, set the EQ to 12:00 Clean was down and Vol. at about 9:00. I was greeted with a beautifull fuzzy clang of the strings and into harmonic feedback( I was still plugging everything in!) Volume on the amp is low for marriage reasons. The amp is on the clean channel. I hit the ominous Am chord. WHAM! Bigger sound, more bass, seemed a bit clearer and the gain! Oh the gain!
As I calmed a bit, i brought the gain back to 1-2:00( my usual) and remembered what makes the Spina Drive quot;Sparklequot;, so I up the clean to about 12:00, quot;bringggggggggquot; Nice! Back the clean off a bit and the Vol on the guit, what a nice balance of warm fuzzy and clean shimmer. Right into quot;Southboundquot; Yeah!
Now this is where I get a bit upset, I switch to the dirty channel and back the normal gain of 1-2:00 down to about 10-11:00. Spina drive off. I go to get a pair of sunglasses, and run through my usual riffs and things, cool, my SS amp actually sound like it might have a bit of soul, Spina Drive on, a dark evil soul that is! Chunk, sustain, and best of all, clarity. The clean really sets this baby apart from other pedals. Think of it like running your Marshall with the A/B box on and your Twin is spewing out clean tones at the same time. I've spent YEARS of reserch, scouring E-bay, Harmony-Central, we all know the routine, to find that special recipie of sweet tones and crystal cleans, while all along the real home of tone was right south of me here in NJ down in Sunny Florida. Excellent job John! I can't wait to really open her up at volume and let her sing. In fact I'll take credit for naming your first handbuilt custom pedal,,,, quot;The Fat Ladyquot;
Thanks again and it's been a pleasure, I enjoy our phone conversations and I HIGHLY recccomend anyone looking for more tone or that special something in an overdrive, distortion or wah pedal, to contact John. You won't be dissapointed! Mike
Absolutely phenomenal Mike...If you guys keep posting these types of reviews,I'm going to have to knock my already low mod price down even more! ;o)
Most of you already know by now,that these reviews mean alot more to me than the small price I make doing the pedal mods...If you click on a pedal that I Modded for you on your board,and it inspires you to play better,then I'm really glad to be part of that....Thanks to you Mike and to all who have taken the time to post...I Love reading this stuff....
And Mike....Enjoyed talking to you also my friend...
