I just got an EBMM JP6 and I love it! great guitar...I'm kinda on the fence with the bridge pickup though..at first I didn't like it at all..I ordered a steves special to replace it, but then I raised the pole peices, adjusted the action and thought it sounded really good...
then I was playin' my esp with the JB in there and I forgot how great the attack is on that guitar..
so I don't know if I wanna install the SS or if I wanna just return it to MF..I have about another 35 days on their return policy...and I still have another 20 through the dimarzio exchange policy, if I should install it and not like it..
it's not that I totally hate the way the JP pups sound..I like the way they're voiced...nice and even and clear, pretty big sounding....but they're either not quite hot enough or don't have enough bite for me...I think it's an output thing..
anywho, does anyone know what the specs are of the stock JP pups are?? they don't have any values anywhere on the dimarzio site..so I can't tell what the steves special (an estmation, of course) will sound like in there...if it's got just about the same values with maybe a little more output then I'm most likely sold!
I just don't wanna screw around with everything then not like it...
thanks, guys..any info on these things and the steves speical in one of these ernie balls for those of you who've done that, would help
DiMarzio has, in response to an e-mail, told me that the closest pickup, in specs, to the JP6 bridge, is a DropSonic. Coincidentally, that's what JP himself is using on all of his guitars tuned below Eb on tour.
That said, he's also re-designing the JP pickups. The general consensus is that they sound dull and lifeless, and I'd have to agree.Put that SS in!!

pups are the biggest pain in the ass...LOL...I'm tryin' to get the actual specs from dimarzio so I can make a somewhat informed decision..kinda know what I'm getting into..
I really love the output and attack of my JB....the jp pups are a little smoother, which I also like, but I'm lookin' to get a bit of that attack back...as I said, I just don't think they're quite hot enough..
I'm afraid with the somewhat scooped mids that the SS is going to sound a little too compressed for me...
case in point with the output..I dropped D on my JP last night..and while it did sound growly and chunky, it just didn't sound quite as tight and hot as I like it...it's kinda like when I had the Demon in my ESP...it was nice and growly but wasn't quite tight enough...
so I'm wondering if the SS will fix that...
I owned an SS once. It was without a doubt the b landest and most sterile pickup I have ever used. No mids = no character.
Petrucci used to use the Steve's Special in his Ibanezes on the earlier records. I had one in a USRG and it was a pretty cool pickup in that guitar. It was a little sterile, but it responed well to gain and was very articulate. I preferred it to the Tone Zone I replaced it with. I'd certainly give it a shot...
