Hi Guys, I'm new here so please be patient!
I've modded my Tele to have a Strat hardtail bridge and traditional humbucker in the bridge position. Bought a standard Pearly Gates first, which worked okay but the spacing was wrong (Doh!). Bought a Pearly Trembucker instead and it's given me major headaches. Sounds weak and doesn't cancel the hum (Louder hum than the lipstick single coil neck pickup when the gain's on). I checked my wiring (red/wht together, blk to switch, grn to pot and I earthed the bare wire) but nothing got rid of the noise. The only way it would work was when I wired red/wht to the switch and earthed blk/grn. Could this be a mis-wired pickup from the factory (i.e with start/finish wires the wrong way around)? If so, has anyone else experienced this? I've yet to try wiring it properly but with two wires changed around, as my patience was exhausted after 4 hours of frustration re-earthing and re-soldering the whole damn guitar... I was just glad to get it usable before my rehearsal!
A fairly long winded question I know, but any advice would be greatly appreciated!
If you are using a standard Fender tele neck pickup, you need to put the green to switch, black and bare to ground, and red amp; white together.
I have never seen a miswired Duncan pickup, but if you have a multimeter, you can find out easily enough.
Thanks Benjy, that was my first try but didn't cancel the hum! The neck pup is a Seymour Alnico Pro... Do you reckon the way it's wired now is okay or should I try swapping some wires around?
That is strange. If you are using a Duncan pickup at the neck, black should be hot and red and white soldered together and taped off.
Also, just recheck your soldering connections. It once took me 3 days to find a bad ground connection in one of my guitars.
Might be easier to just switch the green and black wires if it's out of phase with the other pickups.
This sounds close to what i was going through with my Duncan 59's in a tele parts guitar.... noisy as hell for some reason and i couldn't find the source....
That's the weird thing, I know it's not out of phase with the neck p/up, or even that it's the neck causing problems because I've even unwired the neck and had just the pearly in, with the same problem. It's not like it's out of phase with the neck, it's like it's out of phase within itself (nazal, low powered and hums like a mf).
