After noodling around on the 'ol twanger with some friends today, I decided to waste some of my Saturday at the local guitar shop. So I walk in, and there is a sweet Gibson BluesHawk hanging on the wall. I grab it and ask to play it through the Peavey Classic 30.
Gibson:
Great feel! The neck wasn't a bat like most Les Pauls, but it wasn't a toothpick either. I'd say it was slightly thicker than my Explorer's neck, but just overall SO comfortable. Fit my small hands, and the frets were in great shape. I was pretty intrigued by the rotary switch on the guitar too, that thing offers an insane amount of tonal variety! Great feel, naturally smooth and easy bending, SUPERB tone, and it looks cool too! I would describe the tone as being very natural, having a lot of body, and with the rotary switch, I would venture to say it is the quintessential blues axe. If I could find one for real cheap, I would jump on it in a second.Peavey Classic 30:
This was my first time playing P90s through ANY amp, so it was quite a trip. What I noticed right off the bat was that this amp is really simple and has a great clean tone! It sounds a lot like my Carvin tube amp, but with a bit more beef. The solo boost is a great feature, gives you that awesome bluesy-rock grit and cleans up nicely. I can see why guys who are more into rootsy styles would like this amp, it is very responsive to touch and is defined enough for rhythmic and solo work. It's no gain-monster, but I'd say it covers most of the classic-rock spectrum. If not, you could always stick some pedals in front of it; with a clean channel that sweet and sparkley, I can only imagine it'd be a good mate with most OD pedals and trebleboosters. Bravo to Peavey for creating such a cool meat-and-potatoes amp! Some of the old guys (40-50 years old) in the store heard me playing some blues and I got offers to join some bands! I'm still undecided, but it would be pretty cool to jam on weekends with guys that are old enough to be my parents!
Blueshawks are amazing guitars I've played several of them and I'm looking to buy one (if i can find one). That amp sound cool I'll have to go check one out.
I have a Blueshawk - It's a really cool guitar, but I eventually got fed up with the electronics and stuff... Right now it's sitting, mostly gutted, awaiting a setup and some Duncans. I'm thinking about throwing a couple of Mini HBs in there, and leaving the Varitone out. It was a cool novelty, but I got to the point where it was always bypassed anyway.
