Hi, i have owned a few 80watt solid state amps and i have hated the tone from them. I have recently been considering a tech 21 trademark 60 or the roland cube 60. But it has been suggested to me that i try and get hold of a cheap second hand all tube amp.

The peavey classic 30 is available to me but i am not sure it would be right for me.

First of all the sound......i play mostly high gain metal it has to be said, will this amp deliver any good high gain sounds? is there any way i can make it do so if it can't straight out of the box? Also what is this amp like in general?

Secondly i know nothing about tube amps, do they need a lot of maintenence? is maintenence expensive? how long do tubes last? etc etc, really i know nothing so if anyone can help me out and give their thoughts and some tips it would be much appreciated.

thanks

For the tones you're looking for, I'd suggest the Cube.
The C30 is a cool amp but it doesn't do high gain without pedals.

Agreed 100% - I had one and although the dirty channel is very good, it's meant more for classic rock and blues.

1. If you stay solid state the Cube can give you some really kickass tones.

The classic 30 is a very cool quot;rock and rollquot; amp. Sounds like the cube might be for you. That being said...if you can snag the classic 30 for cheap, grab it, you might want it if your taste ever changes. Also Classic 30's and 50's are some of the best Tube amps to learn on. They use a simple straightforward tried and true design that is easy to understand. Take the amp out of the cab and look at it.

If you've never played a cranked tube amp before you owe it to yourself to get in a room where you can dime one and effing rip it. You will never be the same!

Look at the blue Traynor 50 watt combo. It's got a pretty versatile preamp and EQ, so it can do the metal thing in addition to classic rock, etc. Guitar Player liked it, and it's not real expensive as tube amps go.

Dude, get a tube amp!

The classics are EL84 amps, so they are really NOT metal amps. If you do go classic, get the Classic 50 head. I see them as low as 200 bucks. You can add a great cab with it!

Look for an old Peavey Mace or mod an old Music Man or something. Get a tube amp!

I highly recommend saving up and at least getting yourself an old Marshall JCM800 and a cab, you won't regret it. You also can't go wrong with the 5150 for metal.

I'm hopefully getting a second hand classic 30 on sunday. I've heard them a fair few times, one of the best tones i've heard from a under 1k amp. They aren't for metal though, so probably not for you if thats what you want.

I'd say for brutal gain, Solid state is a better way to go. Go play a Roland Cube 60, on rectifier model (Boogie), and i assure you, it's serious, tight and honest to the bone. And you can get that sound at sensible volume. I find if i hit my tube amp too hard with level boost/distortion before the input, it gets out of control, so for serious high gain i use a cube.

I got them used and for cheap... But if i was looking at new amps i'd be looking at the Traynor amps for sure....

I know alot of cats who play Classic 30's and have been doing so for years and have some great tone.

...none of them are metal guys.

Get a Marshall or a 5150 or a Triple X or a Mesa Rectal-Fryer or whatever...just don't try and make a perfectly good amp do something neither God nor its creator ever intended for it to do.
