Been thinking about those nice 72 Telecaster Deluxe reissues...the ones with the Strat headstocks and the Les Paul-style pickup and switch configuration. I play 'em in stores and love 'em so I'd say I have bad GAS...

Now, of course, when i meet a guitar i like, the first things i start to consider are ways to like it more...and i'm thinking about some push/pull pots for all those knobs. Is there any reason the Jimmy Page wiring or something like that wouldn't work in one of these Teles?

Dunno, but I wish they'd make an American made version of those delicacies too..

Empty Pockets, I feel the same as you. I was playing a ton of guitars the last time I went to GC and the '72 Telecaster Deluxe just worked the best for me. For around $550, that is a heck of a lot of guitar. The pickups were unique and sounded great to me.

The only problem I forsee with the Jimmy Page wiring is that I'm not sure how many leads are off of Fender's quot;Wide Rangequot; humbuckers. Push pull pots are used for coil splitting and if you have 2 conductor wiring (like a lot of pickups), you won't be able to coil split them (look for a 4 conductor equipped bucker).

I think these are very underrated guitars and some of the indy rock guys are picking up on them (bands like Snow Patrol, Maroon 5 and Franz Ferdinand to name three). The Radiohead guys have been using them for a long time

Weeell I'd probably put new PUPs in there if I was gonna go for the JP mod...would any pickups be able to supply a good rockin' tone in full humbucker mode and split for a decent Tele single coil imitation? That would be ideal, and AMAZING if you ask me.

Probably difficult without the typical tele bridge, which certainly is an important factor in the tele tone...

If the two pickups are true humbuckers and they are 4-conductor (or you have the skill to convert them to 4-conductor), there's no reason it couldn't work.

The only thing I'd suggest is to locate a used Japanese version for the same price as a new Mexican version. The Japanese ones use better body wood, and the necks play better. Just my 2 cents.
