Just random....
If I were to play a melody/solo and base it on a A Lydian (A B C D E F G A), how would I emphasize on A as the tonal center of that mode and not C considering it is a mode of C. Furthermore, this line has no chords playing behind it to use as an outline for anything.

Help Please?!

A Lydian, is spelt: A, B, C#, D#, E, F#, G#

A Lydian is a mode of E major. (built on it's 4th degree)

If you want to make something sound Lydian, the sharp 4 needs to be stressed in the melody, because that is the characteristic note of that mode.

Mode names confuse me.

Resolving your phrases to the A note will make it the tonal center. You can use the scale patterns that you normally use for C Major or A minor (they are the same), just remember to mostly start and end phrases on the A note.

While the importance of focusing on the tonal centers cannot be overstated never forget to clip the sides as well. if you focus only on the tonal center the tonal sides will start scraping eachother causing considerable foot pain..
