I really want another axe, but ive been thinking about something a little different. Im a massive brian may fan and ive always wanted something with burns trisonics in it but i dont want a copy of brian mays guitar because, well, that would be copying...and i dont just want to get some for my strat because i like it as it is...so i was thinking about making some sort of tele shaped guitar and have it fitted with a set of burns trisonics.
Was wondering what suggestions you would all have for woods and stuff. I love the tones and feel of mahogany guitars more than alder ones and was thinking that i could come up with something pretty special with a mahogany guitar with trisonics...what do you all think about that?
Just wanted to get a little feedback
There's a lot of options here- Mahogany and ash will give you very differnt sounds- Hard tail vs soft, etc- What sounds are you really going for, what styles will you use it for?
Tele bodies are the most modded out there, but not what I would pick if you're going as close to a may sound as you could get- On the other hand, the trisonics are going to be interesting pups one way or the other and the tele set up is great for trying lots of differnt combos-
Also I'm jealous- I've got a warmoth project in mind, but no way to get to it soon-
Looking forward to hearing what you do!
A guy (Victor) from plexi palace suggested i use Korina as the wood for a guitar like this. Im not trying to duplicate brian may's sound by any stretch, but i do love his tone and wouldnt mind getting something in the ball park and above all, something totally different to lots of things that are out there already...something unique. I mean i wont be using Vox AC30's or anything like that like what brian may uses so im not fussed about getting as close as possible to his sound, i will however try to wire it up like his because i heard that his wiring setup is very versatile and can get some great sounds!
But yeah...i dont know how close i am to getting to it either
Sounds like we're trying something a bit similar- As opposed to trying to recreate a specific sound, I'm trying to create something of a new sound and looks like we will both be taking shots in the dark becuase there aren't any very similar gtrs out there to compare them to-
On one hand this concerns me, because standards (Gibsons through marshalls, mahgoany with maple caps) tend to become standards because they work- So the chance for failure with a radical change is probably relatively high and we certainly won't be able to resell what we are building (unless we get a gold disk
On the other hand, that's exactly what great guitarists like may or evh or allen holdsworth did- they chassed their own sound, it took a lot of experimenation and then they ended up with what they needed-
I guess this is the really good reason fro trying something off the beaten path-
Yeah im with you totally, i think going off the beaten path is what can distinguish someone from the crowd. But im not stabbing too much in the dark because the guy from plexipalace advised me on what kind of wood would be good with those pickups.
Either way though at the end of the day we'll have something very unique...and hey, surely it wont sound too bad
What sort of warmoth project do you have in mind?
I've loved p90s since my first SG, but a lot have things have changed since then-
1. I can't handle hum
2. I can't play anything less that 25.5
3. Althought I've got a few non maple fingerboards that I love, I really prefer maple
So here's my really sacriligous plan-
-Warmth 25.5 scale maghoney flat top with mahoney neck and maple fingerboard
-Strongly leaning towrd the L5 body for more mahagoney mass to offset maple fingerboard brightness- Hardtail
- Really unusual pup selection to get noise canceling and many more sounds, per an earlier post
quot;At this point I am considering an L5S body routed HSH or PSP I’m leaning towards P90 routing to use the real things- But using phat cats or bluesbucker with hum routing would give me more options in the case I’ve designed a dog and have to drop back to humbuckers.
Here’s the real kicker- I want to look at a SC dual rails pup in the center with it’s own 5 way parallel to the p90s that are on their own 5 way- Yes, I know it’s weird, and we’re talking about 2 knife switches right next to each other, but here’s what I’m imagining- I’m going to start from Artie’s 4 position tele mod but hoping to get 1 extra position in #4-
P90 Switch
1. Bridge
2. Bridge neck parallel
3. Bridge neck series
4. Bridge neck series out of phase
5. Neck
SC dual rail switch
1. single coil that is hum complimentary to bridge P90
2. Off
3. Full SC rail with spin a split
4. P90s off, full SC rail with spin a split
5. Single coil that is hum complimentary to neck P90 quot;
Pretty wild huh?
I'm still not entirely sure this switching is even possible, but just no way I can pursue it right now-
Hope you get yours done soon so I will have some inspiration
