Are there any differences in the sound between these two pedals? I know they look a little different, but basically they're the same pedal aren't they?
they shouldnt sound any different from each other. Maxon made the Ibanez TS808.
They are pretty much the same pedal however from what I understand, the Maxon's have inferior parts and construction.

This isn't true...The Maxon comes with the JRC4558D chip and the TS9 has a Toshiba chip...Both pedals are the same circuit board and components, but Maxon uses true bypass and Ibanez uses FET instead...They both sound likes Tube Screamers...
Thanks for the info. If there's no real difference in the two I will probably just buy the $120 Maxon to save some money.

The Maxon has the better chip and true bypass and is a great choice..
Does the OD808 have true bypass? I know the TS9 does.

I'm pretty sure, but one uses a top mounted DPDT switch and the other has the same looking pedal as a TS9,but is setup also as a true bypass switch..
John
Sorry, I meant the Maxon OD9 has true bypass, but does the OD808?
Listen to John...he's our resident expert. (I WILL send that TS9 to you one day....)

The quot;potsquot; on the Maxon (actually just trimmers on the circuit board) are kind of junky, IMO. I don't know if they still do that, but I'd definitely take a Maxon apart before I ever bought another one.

I don't know if any place would let a guy take them apart without buying it first?I didn't see anything within either of the 2 Maxon pedals mentioned that would make me feel unsafe about owning one? I mean I've been inside both of these pedals....Curly has one that I Modded and I've done several other ones(Both models)...

Yeah, I know...it's unfortunate that they don't show the guts on the website. IMO, that's something to be proud of, not hide. IIRC, Curly has an 820, which is top-of-the-line. The quot;reissuequot; series (i.e, the OD808) are the only Maxon pedals that seem to have a build quality issue (IMO)...the rest seem to be very nice. I had so many problems with that pedal (the OD808) that the guy at Maxon accused me of purposefully damaging pedals just to mess with him.
I'd appreciate anyone's input, but this is really aimed at John since he seems to be the resident pedal expert. I was asking about the OD808 in first place beacause I was planning to put it in front of a Blues Jr. to try and get that SRV, blues/rock sound. Is this the best pedal for the job or is there something better out there?

There are tons of Tube Screamer clones out there today! SRV used an Ibanez TS808 and I'm guessing the TS10 also from what others have said? I'm not sure if SRV's pedals were stock, but a TS808 would get you pretty darn close...The Maxon is the same basic circuit,in fact Maxon was actually the original manufacturer of the original Tube Screamers..I'm pretty sure the Maxon line leans on true bypass? The Ibanez stuff doesn't,but you also don't notice any tone sucking by the design of the Ibanez product...A TS9 is another great pedal, but it's better with some changes...
John
thanks alot for the input
When I bought my Maxon OD808 last yr, the manual said the OD808 WAS NO TRUE BYPASS. Ill believe the manual.

Ok...I wasn't positive on that? The FET circuit does a good job of retaining your tone when you kick out of the pedal...Tone sucking isn't a complaint of any of the Tube Screamers normally...
Thanks for the correction on this...
