Hey All,
I was wondering if anyone knew the difference between a P-90 Pickup verses a Humbucker? Tone wise? Will a P-90 hold up to metal? Alternitive? Punk?
Im either thinking of getting a guitar with a single p-90 or a single Humbucker.
Thanks
P90 is not a metal pickup, at least not a traditional P90. Duncan makes some with hotter winds of the P90 but keep in mind that no matter how hot, it's still a single coil which means it does not cancel or quot;buckquot; the 60-cycle hum (hence the name quot;humbuckerquot;).
You've got a Dimebag Darrell picture in your avatar so I think it's safe to say you're typically in high-gain/high-volume situations, which will magnify the hum problem big time -- even if you could find a P90 wound hot enough to give you the beef and chunk you need.
P90's are great for blues and classic rock but not for metal. Go with the humbucker guitar -- and slap a Duncan Dimebag Darrell pickup in it for good measure.
One option is to do a quot;musequot; and get a high output p90 at the NECK - u can get really cool riffing tones out of one. A bridge p90 is good at alt rock and punk, but it won't help u much for metal.
A P90 is a higher output single coil pickup....Still has the hum and noise of a single coil pickup also...Gibson's version of a single coil pickup.

Hi! I don't think there are pickups for certain styles. They are just tools to achive tone. Many people love p-90 tone for high gain. Listen to Neil Young live solos, last Offspring album, Live at Leed (the Who), Santana at Woodstock... and so on. he bridge P-90 on my Danelectro deliver a very trebly punchy tone which I think it's perfect for typical punk or speed metal rythms.
Does anyone that replied here or anyone know of a good pickup to go in the neck postion to compliment the dimebag? I know I said that I was only going to have a bridge pickup but I cant seem to find a good guitar with just the bridge pickup.
Oh btw will the Dimebag Humbucker hold up with punk too? I dont think punk uses so much gain? maybe a hardcore punk sound. um the punk I play is the vandals, green day, Coheed and Cambria, etc. Metal wise Metallica, Pantera, Atreyu, Avenged Sevenfold (which is both punk and metal), Shadows Fall, etc.
