hi,
I've got a question/problem and hope that you could help me finding the right decision...
I own a Ibanez Universe UV7BK 1997 Black model (click me for a pic). The all black model was manufactured for only one year (yes, 1997 ) and had a listprice of $2000.
I paid $1000 in 1999 for it and liked it mainly because of the 7th string. Nowadays I don't like it too much (I sometimes call it a quot;dead piece of woodquot;) and play it rather infrequent. The neck shaping is quite flat and the neck itself is rather wide and somehow feels quot;strangequot;. The sounds are quot;okquot; but I like the other guitars better. With the look I was never really happy - the black finish is boring - I'm more into nice wood tops. Currently I'm totally into my LP which I play like 90% of my time. The other 10% would go to the RG.
It has some bumps on the back, some minor scratches on the front and the nut had to be replaced...
Would you sell this guitar? And how much would you want for it?
It is rather seldom - but has some bumps and doesn't look that good; it has 7 strings - but I don't play it too often.
any comment is appreciated
I know, the selling question is really up to myself - but other opinions would help me
Universes are actually pretty cool guitars........PM me if you´re that far, I may be interested (WHAT?? Zerb?? AN IBANEZ??? Oh, a ´97 UV, the Black one, Now I understand )
Used prices on Universes seem to be in the 7-800 dollar range, you may get lucky and get more because you´re over here in Germany with me. But I´ve ALSO seen UVs go for 450#8364; and kicked myself in the ass for not bidding
If you don't use it, sell it, plain and simple. That's what I do, er force myself to do. There are other things you can use the money to buy that you would enjoy more.
I loooooove my 98 UV777BK. If I had the fundage, I'd buy your Universe.
P.S. Tone Zone/Air Norton 7 combo is your friend.
The UV7BK is the quot;dogquot; of the Universe line; they really lack any of the natoables or spectacularness of any other model out there. Collectors loathe them and afficinados probably won't be bothered with it unless you're selling for a lower price (which they typically fetch) and are looking for it as a project instrument.
If you don't play it the odds of it being worth less grow with each day; they're not that collectible. Selling means cutting your losses pretty much.
The other downside is that you'll also be competing with the late 90's RG 7 string market, which really commands a very entry-level sort of price typically.
On these shores I don't think you'd get much more than $700 for it in excellent condition. Like I said, it's competing with the late 90's RG 7 string line so your niche is people that HAVE to have a Universe but don't have a grand or so for the spectacular looking UV777BK models.
You might head on over to jemsite.com and try and unload it over there; they're fanatical about the Jems and Universes and you may find a completist collector on a tear for a group photo or someone looking to mod one.
God luck with it.
