I took some pictures and listed a guitar on ebay yesterday. Over night i left the guitar in the case that I am going to ship it in. When i took the guitar out of the case this morning i noticed a real musty/rotten smell. The case came with a guitar i bought about 6 months ago,and since then it has set closed in my attic. Any ideas how to get the smell out of the case in the next few days? I am afraid to spray anything in it because i don't know if it will effect the guitar finish when i place the guitar back in it to ship.

any suggestions?

leave the case open, sprinkle some baking soda all over the case, let it set for a few days, vaccum it out.......that should work

baking soda wont effect the finish if some is left in the case?

Sprinkle some popcorn (preferably freshly popped) in there

close the lid for a few days and the popcorn should remove the offensive odor,or at least replaced the odor with a popcornish smell, which isn't so bad.

How about a couple of those air fresheners that people put on their rear view mirrors.

Just air it out as much as you can....

Outdoors will do better.

You may want to try some mild deodorant stuff.. febreeze or whatever in a very small quantity, then let it air-out as much as you can....

Take the dead fish out.
Or use the Baking Soda. Just don't sprinkle any where the guitar rests. You should be able to get it all out, but that way you'll be sure. I can't see it doing anything to the finish as long as it stays dry, and even wet, I'm not sure it would do any harm. Better safe than sorry, though. Just getting some in the case should help a lot.

Baking soda's not going to harm any finish used on guitars that i'm aware of.
Polymer finishes are pretty much invulnerable, Nitro-cellulose is inert to most things that don't have organic solvents or plasticisers in them

There's always threads like this that are so valuable... Baking soda... Will that remove a musty/moldy smell out of a 35 year old case?

my roomate's dv-8 case has smelled like urine since the day he bought it. musty aint bad compared to that

i'll put some baking soda in a bowl and leave it in there and see what happens. Thanks for the tips
